1) You're overthinking.
2) How can you get nostalgic for something that still exists?
3) Political? LMAO.

I didn't say political in the very literal meaning.

I'm NOT nostalgic for 'ME' being the remote control. "Hey 'kid', change the channel to 3'. waiting.. nothing on... "Change it to channel 4". This would go on for a while until the ole man would find something he wanted to watch.

I like when there were fewer channels. There were more shared moments as everyone had the same channel more or less. Media fragmentation is more bad than good especially now that reality tv is so big. Cable used to be good since it meant more niche and creative TV.

I subscribed to "ONTV" the last part of 1977.

I used to love asking others, "Hey, what's on on ON tonight", kind of had that "Sha Na Na" ring to it.

I would invite friends over who had no idea of the service, especially the "R" rated movies they showed.

When the first obscenities were muttered and/or naked scene came on they were justifiably shocked and surprised.

My answer was, Wow, I don't know, they must have made a mistake in the studio and unintentionally broadcast it! After about five minutes I would tell them!

The lack of real variety on many cable stations these days make me go to a combo of broadcast TV or my iTunes library. If I gotta watch something repeatedly, it might as well be something I really like.

Here's a PSA ad from the seventies played in drive-ins and movie theaters, desperately trying to sway people to stay away from pay TV:
