It's hard to believe, but it's been twenty years since HBO began its foray into original programming with "OZ". Vice wrote a very detailed article, with many interviews from cast and crew of the series. Good read for those (like myself) who were big fans of the show.

Ah, that explains why one of the HBO channels was marathoning it a couple of days ago.
I was an avid watcher when it debuted. Unbelievably good television and what a cast - Edie Falco pre-"Sopranos," JK Simmons pre-just about everything, Rita Moreno, BD Wong, Dean Winters (re-calculating) ... - just amazing.
Have to say, though, that it wasn't the first original series on HBO that I watched regularly. Before "OZ" there was "Dream On" which ran for six seasons.
Oz Was ground breaking barbecue it gave us a almost real look into our Prison system.
Some of the actors on OZ went on to star on, The Sopranos, and the Wire

This is one of the best and most underrated shows in HBO's history of original programming. Compared to today, not a lot of people had HBO so I understand how a lot of folks never saw it.
It was the first hour-long drama series on pay TV, if not cable.
Very good show.. Strong throughout.. Though I wasn't a huge fan of the last season and ending.. Most people had been killed off and the final season's quality reflected that.
But Oz and The Sopranos were the reasons I subscribed to HBO. They had good stuff back then.. From the Earth to the Moon.. Band of Brothers.. Up to John Adams everything was pretty excellent.

Don't Forget Six Feet Under
What Show Kills off the main character in the 1st Episode then proceeds for 6 more seasons. I liked Dino Character even though he was a racist punk.
