What an interesting question, OP!

I used to almost always have ESPN on as background noise when I was working, reading, or whatever. (I don't like dead silence.) Now there are too many ESPN "personalities" that I just cannot stand, so it doesn't work any more unless it's a college football game (as long as my beloved Michigan is NOT playing ... if they are, I get too nervous to watch ... I know, I know, that's nuts!).

These days, when I wake up in the middle of the night and can't get back to sleep (especially if I've just awoken in a panic from a nightmare), I put on Netflix. Frasier is probably my favorite for mindless silliness (love the characters, and I still find the show funny even after seeing all the episodes several times!).

I also usually like crime shows but not in the middle of the night ... except for Longmire. For some reason I find that show kind of gentle and sweet (plus I have a crush on the sheriff ).

Law & Order. I've seen them all so many times I don't have to pay attention. I especially like the older ones, pre-9/11, because I can sense in the story lines and backgrounds, the city the way it was before and I like the feel.

Not just anything on HGTV. I like the Property Brothers stuff (but not the beach one), Fixer Upper is harmless enough, and Rehab Addict brings a different twist. Thumbs down though on Flip or Flop, and if that Love It or List It ever comes on, I'm off in search of Andrew Zimmern eating something just because it looks good.

Definitely Frasier. Then, since I don't have cable, Roseanne or The Big Bang Theory. Sometimes I'll put on ME TV which has really old shows including I Love Lucy. They were on the air before I was even born!

General Hospital and also The Journey Home on EWTN. I'm not even Catholic, just enjoy listening to the spiritual journey people go through during their lifetime. The host does a nice job.

General Hospital probably because I got roped into watching it everyday when I was in high school and babysat two little girls who insisted on watching it. There's often a sense of humor worked into the show along with the ridiculous circumstances the characters find themselves in. It's familiar I guess since I've been watching it so long.
I don't know if there is still a nun, wearing a habit, on EWTN or not, but she was so soothing.

I turn on ME TV and watch a bunch of classic, old TV shows.

Or, I'll watch cooking shows on PBS.
