Missy and the mom are the best characters.

I suspect that the main problem was that "Young Sheldon" seemed to have more in common with "The Wonder Years" than it does with "The Big Bang Theory." The warm hand holding moment with his dad was a departure from what we rightly expected based on the adult Sheldon.

I think they are going to slowly take the father down the road of what the grown Sheldon on TBBT has led us to know of him. Beer bottle in hand quite a bit, young Sheldon asking about his father drinking all the time.

My hubby and MIL didn't know that the mom is played by Laurie Metcalf real life daughter and remarked how well the actress looked and sounded like Laurie. LOL. I let informed them.

I will definitely give it a shot.

I did not see the show, but have seen the commercials and some press for it and thought the exact same thing as your hubby and MIL!!!

I was not looking forward to this spin-off as I don't see any of the BBT characters interesting enough to warrant their own TV series. Despite that, I liked Young Sheldon overall and will watch it again.

I enjoyed it. This show could have been another 3-camera set piece with canned jokes and a laugh track. But it's a comedy with an actual story. The kid is great. It's a show much more in the vein of THE WONDER YEARS than THE BIG BANG THEORY. The only thing I really didn't care for was the narration. I hope they lose that. It's unnecessary and distracting.

Exactly what I was thinking. I also noticed that the show is already fleshing out the characters of his father and brother and how they are affected by Sheldon's uniqueness. This may be less of a show completely about Sheldon and more about how having a child prodigy in the family affects the entire family.

Also, shout out to the cameo by Arthur Jeffries/Professor Proton/Bob Newhart.

I am on the fence after watching the pilot. Out of the gate it felt like all of the obnoxiousness of Sheldon without the humor. I can see the comparison to "Wonder Years" but I wasnt a fan of that show either.

Most shows with children develop slowly, at least no faster than the kids grow up. This one will be different. (If it lasts.) We'll see two seasons of Sheldon in high school (with his brother and dad), and then it'll move on to college. That would be a major change for the show.
