It was a special kind of funny. One that I don't think can be pulled off, in the writing and acting, in television shows of today.
The humor was inherent in the drama itself. Plot and dialogue were not all structured around the punchline. There are still shows around that manage to pull that off, though they are becoming rarer all the time. Shows like ...
JUSTIFIED. A great crime drana that got really dark at times but was also REALLY funny.
DETECTORISTS. One of the most sublime dramadies I've seen in ages.
DEAD LIKE ME. Again, could get really dark and sad, but was also really funny.
WONDERFALLS. Pretty much a straight up comedy, but the humor was inherent in the characters and plots themselves. Nothing was every built around a punchline like in sitcoms.
BREAKING BAD and BETTER CALL SAUL. Like JUSTIFIED above, both very dark and grim at times, but also very, very funny.
But no, I don't expect CBS will be able to pull this off. They are too struck in their rut of bad sitcoms and dramas for senior citizens.
Magnum P.I. had such a good cast & in general, excellent writing that allowed it to be more than the sum of its parts. I can't see how the remake could ever capture that.
Growing up, I enjoyed this show, along with Hawaii 5-0. I'm seeing mini trailers saying "coming in September," with Higgins being a woman. I really don't care. The original show wasn't really that great, I just liked Tom Selleck.
I don't see myself watching ths redo, unless a cameo appearance is in the works. Not sure a cameo appearance would be advertised, but I would likely check it for that when it premieres. (Friday night? deja vu).

Monday nights. CBS is keeping its Friday block at least one more year.
As a woman who has had a crush on Tom Selleck since the original Magnum I will not watch this. Plus I am sick of all the reboots. Heard Alf may be redone. Enough already.
I am so disappointed with who they cast as Magnum. It won't work. They did great with the casting of Rick and TC. They tried to be different with Higgins as a woman.
