Well first, freedom of speech protects from Government persecution not protecting the right to spout off at an awards show. Second, would you want the cook at a restaurant you're eating at to stand there and ramble on about their political views? No difference.
The Oscars are watched globally, and the ratings from other countries are not included in the US ratings.
The contribution to the economy by the entertainment industry is is also quite large, so Americans who don't like films or actors can complain all they want. It does not really matter. There is a bigger picture.
I always find it amusing when Americans who claim to 'not watch tv or films' think that matters. Our entertainment industry is global and there is no issue with protectionism, because the US provides entertainment around the entire world, while contributing to the US economy and employment.
EXACTLY! 2 things really pissed me off - they spent more time mourning a drug addict - Michael Jackson - who overdosed then they did paying homage to Farah Fawcett who fought a heroic battle with cancer and died within days of each other. And they keep inviting that woman beating imbecile Chris Brown to events and awarding him things - him and that idiot girlfriend of his who had every opportunity to prove herself a positive role model for other young girls but instead - decided it was ok to get the hell beaten out of her because he still loves her. Oh their whole pot smoking, cross dressing, woman beating, baby mama, cop hating culture is just getting too be way to much for me.
