I wish I could be excited about this. Rent is in my Top Three. Seriously LOVE that show. But I'm worried that it's going to be ridiculously santitized.

I was surprised when they announced it, and expected it to be canceled. They've set an air date, so it seems like it is actually happening. They know what the musical is, and what it is about. I cant imagine them changing it. Its very popular, and people would not be happy with even the slightest changes. I am looking forward to it, but I am a little skeptical of how it will be on network TV.
I'm just hoping they don't cast a bunch of teen Disney stars like they did with Grease, and they take their time to find good Broadway actors to fill the roles.
They all had commercials. The commercials are what pays for the show to happen.
That's what I thought. But with over 60 years of attending the theater, I don't think I'll be watching another show on TV (at least one that isn't DVRed to skip ads.)
The commercials (and I suspect taking the time to speed through the ads) interrupt the flow of the performance
Unlike TV shows which are written around planned breaks, plays today are built around 1 intermission. ( In the good old days when scenery had to be changed by hand, there were act breaks.) Today, everything flows

It'll be like all the other TV musicals ... big name stars (regardless of whether they possess both singing and acting skills) backed by Broadway performers. They're not going to use Broadway actors who don't have broad name recognition.

It's not live, but you might want to check out Broadway HD. It's like Netflix for Broadway.
