Breaking Bad. I tried about seven times, but could not get past the first 5 minutes of episode 1. Then I ran out of things to watch and everyone kept raving about it, so I "took a dive".
It's not a bad show after all. Fully unrealistic yet...
On the contrary, I stumbled upon Game of Thrones by pure accident. Just like into the middle of some episode. Fell in love instantly. Just saying, as many here state it as being hard to get into.
Breaking Bad first season was tough for me, didn't like much of the characters, finally got interesting and enjoyed the rest.
Didn't know anything about GofT until 2nd season, happened to catch and episode and instantly intrigued, binged through 1 season and quickly caught up.
House. Wanted to like it, watched a few eps, couldn't stand it. Tried again when it was on reruns all the time, nope.
Bobs Burgers. I like many animated shows, not this one, nothing about this show is appealing.
Many recent sitcoms and dramadies - The Goldbergs, Jane the Virgin, Schitts Creek, Superstore, The Mick, Life In Pieces, Blackish, Fresh Off The Boat, Brooklyn 99, Man with a Plan, Kevin Can Wait. Couldnt get into any of these and most I couldnt even get thru an episode.
There were two that I sort of liked enough to watch sometimes, Speechless and Superior Donuts, both cancelled.
As far as the critically-acclaimed and/or shows my friends watch, I just can’t watch Narcos. I love other gangster shows like Breaking Bad, Peaky Blinders, Gomorrah, The Wire, etc but when I know it’s based on reality rather than pure fantasy, that kills it for me. The real deal has too many bad consequences for too many people, guilty or innocent.
I watched the first several episodes of Breaking Bad. I liked it. Then it started getting a little far fetched and the characters became less realistic and less and less like they were presented. Then I just gave up the plausibility of it and gave up trying to find logic in it and it got interesting again.
I don't have HBO so never got into A Game Of Thrones. I read some very well articulated criticisms of it and thought it was overly hyped. But now I've been watching free clips of it and its very compelling. I despise almost all the characters and hate the absurdity of some of the plots, but its high fantasy soap opera so what can one expect.
When Seinfeld came out, friends told me I'd love it. I knew of Seinfeld's comedy and never thought he was particularly funny. He made observations I'd make, he reminded me of how I think. So maybe he was kind of clever but nothing ground breaking. At least to me. Then I watched it and that cast and the writing and those characters just clicked.
Not like The Simpsons, which had me hooked from the moment I saw them on the Tracy Ulman Show. I'd watch that show just to see the brief segments of them. When their first special came on, I knew it was going to be a hit.
I never have difficulty getting into a series because if I don't like the first couple episodes - I just stop watching. There's so much stuff on to watch I don't see a reason to force myself to watch something that takes too much work. Kinda like love. Either the charisma is there - or - it never will be.
