I used to be an NCIS fan but quit watching some years ago when I got tired of the formula. Now I see that Mark Harmon has left. I was certain the series would end without him, but the production company and CBS have other ideas. Are they right? Is NCIS like “Law and Order” - actors come and go, but the brand is more important?
No brand is more important than the actors.
No bad actor can save brand, no matter how strong.
McGee, Sean Murray, has now quit. Will the show continue on?
At the end of Hawai'i CBS put up the see you soon promos for NCIS and NCIS: Hawai'i . The strike having schedules in flux.
With Los Angeles closing down the Hawai'i season finales feature a supervisory agent from the Office of Special Projects, that's the Los Angeles organization, taking over and ending the show saying that while white hats the Hawaii agents will follow their boss into the grey areas. And they announced that LL Cool J will come on in a reoccurring role reprising his Sam Hanna from Los Angeles, which seems to be in place of a fan favorite character (at least on the fan site I follow) in a similar role who killed off so now there is room for the bigger star.
In all it looks to me like some unused Los Angeles scripts will be converted to Hawaii scripts with SAC Jane Tennent in the G Callen role, a new suit from OSP looking over her shoulder and G Callen's partner Sam Hanna showing up on occasion when they are not doing a straight crime episode.

I have never seen a single episode of any of the NCIS shows.
If I hear that Mr. T or Pee Wee Herman are joining the cast, I might actually tune in. So yes, I'd say the cast matters. At least in my case.
Is the brand more important than the actors? Well, maybe.....but not in the way it is commonly thought.
When the show first came out, I couldn't believe it!......."I had to work with those people (well, NIS) for real in the Navy and I'll be DAMNED if I will watch a show that glorifies them!".....and never did.
I don't care who is in the show, it is just a subject not to be watched.

I only started watching NCIS a few years ago so but the show does seem to have a big change in characters quite often. In the few years I've been watching I've seen Gibbs, Bishop, Jack, Abby and Reeves leave. So far, I'm really liking Nick's character. Don't miss Gibbs at all.

The show has been running for 20 years. For law enforcement types, many characters on the show on their second agency after being a young cop elsewhere the turnover reflects Father Time doing his thing.
