No one was disturbing anyone. Us kids could make noise and a mess and the rest of the house was spotless.
So no, I am not agreeing that the Mother has to keep an eye on the children while they are playing every single second of the day.

It is only until recently that the open concept has become so popular, and adventually it too will go out of style.
I was thinking more of preschool aged kids. I doubt you remember where you spent most of your time playing as a 2 or 3 year old. Now that my kids are a little older, yes, they play in the basement. A few years ago, not so much.

I feel like as "entertaining" (I hate that term) became more casual, the open floor plan became popular. Instead of having a big formal dinner in the dining room, everyone hangs out in the kitchen while you cook. Now the host doesn't want to be alone in the kitchen.

Anyway, people prefer different types of floor plans. I don't see anything wrong with that. Nor do I see anything wrong with wanting 2 sinks in the master. Standards are different in different places. It would be hard to find a house in this area w/o 2 sinks in the master and w/o an open floor plan.

I will agree that going into a 100 year old house and commenting on the lack of closet space and lack of open floor plan is silly.

ETA yes, the comments are repetitive and staged, definitely. But what are you looking for in a house if not the kind of floor plan, the size of the closets, and the number of sinks? you know when you see it on paper how many beds, baths, and square feet it has. If that's all that matters, why go house hunting? Just pick the one that looks best on paper. It is those little things that set one house apart from another.

I also think that people really don't like being in a "formal dining room", it is much more comfortable and relaxed to be sitting in someones kitchen. I am in my BIL house and the formal dining rooms seems so far away so everyone stays in the kitchen which is open to the family room.....so in reality, the formal living room and formal dining room are just 2 rooms which you just walk past.....kinda like a kid speaking, but they are not fun rooms to be in...........so I do get the open concept thing kinda

Yeah, they bought the empty house that they had found the most fault with while looking at it.....surprise, surprise.

Oh, yes, I couldn't stand watching that episode (but I watched it anyway ). I couldn't believe that the second house with the fully upgraded kitchen was snubbed by the woman buyer! She said something about it being "too modern" or something like that. I could tell that their realtor was running out of patience by the look on his face.

What's wrong with thinking a kitchen is too modern? Many people despise modern design and don't want to spend money on it.

I live in the Sacramento area and I hated to see this couple. A bowtie?

This is will agree with. I don't really like a modern kitchen either, especially the kitchens with the "espresso" colored cabinetry, SS and black and grey speckled granite. To me, that is not the look that i would want in my kitchen, so that would be a negative for me.

Who rips out a fully renovated kitchen just because it is not your taste, well, i guess you could, but somehow it seems wrong.

Only the people I have the highest regard for are allowed in my kitchen. Boring visitors always stay in the living room.

If I am making dinner, the boring visitors always sit in the dining room, while the cool ones come have a taste of the food in the kitchen. It is a quality control thing.

I am not a big fan of dining room/living room/kitchen open concept... but it really depends on the house.

I swear to God -- you and I must have been separated at birth! Every time someone uses one of those words (or the other hot-button word -- 'spacious'), my husband has to repeat it, knowing it gets my goat.

I love my open floor plan. It's just me and the DH (and the dogs), and I like being able to watch TV while I cook or bake -- it's better than having a TV in the kitchen like we did back in NJ.
