I think you are mistaking two different sets of commercials. The AT&T commercials are the "I just found the internet" commercial with some newsbreaking history in the background, i.e., Amelia Earhart's long lost plane, the fountain of youth, etc.
The VZW commercials are the eerie commercials at the motel or the Christmas Tree lot, where a sinister person warns them not to go "there." Then you see the VZW "network" guys, and the sinister person quickly changes their tune.
I think one of the best VZW commercials was the poor chap who was told to come "alone" to a specific area to meet what looked like a "mobster" and his two henchmen. He reminds the fellow he was supposed to come alone, and when the fellow explains the group behind him is his network, the "mobster" launches in to his cell phone service -- or lack of a signal -- because he's "always doing business out here."
It's not the commercial per se, but the music behind it. It's that Toyota Prius commercial that they build from twigs and grass and then it decomposes back to the earth. The song is more haunting than Pink Moon or any Nick Drake song out there. The song is called Hometime by the group One EskimO. The song has stuck in my head.

The commercial with the person stuck in the "blast zone" is a Verizon Wireless commercial -- where the construction crew has switched from the Nextel push-to-talk to Verizon Wireless push-to-talk -- and the poor chap left with the Nextel phone is ankle deep in quickly drying concrete.
I do enjoy the AT&T commercials, though, especially the fountain of youth and the Amelia Earhart "I've just found the internet" spots.
There was one a good 5 years ago, where the single mom had to go to work because there's a meeting scheduled, but her little girl wanted to go to the beach. So the mom manages to use some marvy technology to make the meeting go away, they go to the beach, and the little runs up and squeals "Hey everyone, we're going to have a meeeeeeeting."
Anyone got a link on that one? It's truly priceless.
You are right! I had totally forgotten about the AT&T "blast zone" commercial; I don't think I have seen it more than once or twice. Since the VZW push-to-talk commercial seemed to be more prevalent (or at least more prevalent when I was watching TV), I totally forgot about the AT&T commercial. Thanks for the link!
