Hell's Kitchen premieres January 29!
Saw the teasers for Season 5 last night - looks like Ramsey will not disappoint! I love watching this series, because if it paid better I would probably have become a chef/pastry chef myself. So now I get to sneak into the kitchen and see what goes on with those brave enough to go on this show to get a chance at becoming a senior chef at one of Ramsey's restaurants.
Any other fans of the show?

I watched a few minutes of this show and was really turned off by Ramsay. He didn't seem to offer any constructive criticism, just screaming, insults and abuse.
What is the appeal? I don't understand. As a Top Chef junkie, I'm definitely more a fan of the kind and gentle Tom C. approach

I'm also one that LOVES to watch HELL'S KITCHEN. I did my time inside of a real Kitchen. I worked in both a Rib Joint, Opened and operated a Raw-Bar and also worked as a Garde Manger Chef in a four star Establishment that served a Frech/American menu.
Never have I worked under a chef like Gordon Ramsey. I do respect his knowledge and his standards. He only want's each one of his people to succeed. Failure is not an option. That said, the bunch is typically a hand full of people who you wouldn't want cooking your food nor anyones you know. They all grow under this tutilige. Some more than others some not very much, and those that don't leave the kitchen quickly.
I will always wonder how I'd fare in that environment. I know my skill level is way above each one of them, maybe not Top Chef material but boardering that end of the spectrum. But hey, it's for entertianment's sake really. That one of them can succeed and find a great career is very good for them, the winner that is.
I always find if funny how all those people getting free food can be such winey babies... All for the camera and some air time... yikes! Don't cross path's with Chef Gordon....

I enjoyed this show the first couple of seasons, then it began to feel like a big put on act. I don't blame the Chef, he has to do what the public expects, but it doesn't feel as fresh and fun.

I like Top Chef better than Hell's Kitchen - mainly because of the qualifications of the contestants. Top Chef contestants are mainly executive chefs, sous chefs, restaurant owners, etc. But with Hell's Kitchen, they have nannies, stay-at-home dads, part-time short order cooks...c'mon, are you seriously going to have someone with no experience as a chef run a top class restaurant??
I think they bring un-qualified people (although some contestants are qualified) to bring entertainment to the show when they screw up and get yelled at. I enjoy the entertainment portion of it, but i don't like the competition aspect of it.
Also, I read someone that the winner of last season didn't get the job that was promoted - she was supposed to be the executive chef of his restaurant in LA - but he actually gave her a "Senior Chef" title and hired someone else as a Executive Chef.

I'm a huge Hell's Kitchen fan! We had two local competitors last year, so it was nice to watch and see how they progressed. I love Ramsey's outbursts. They make for good TV. I also agree that freeloaders have no right to complain about the quality of food, but then again, they were asked to critique the food, so they're doing their jobs.

me too! Huge fan. I wouldn't wanna work for him but I'm sure there are people foaming at the mouth waiting to do so.
I know a chef who said the guy he trained under makes Ramsey look like Mr. Rogers Now the chef I know is pretty high strung. he knows his stuff though. Seems to always have a lot to contend with. He's really hyper and busy and I like him a lot but not sure I could work for him. I told him that too--he roared with laughter. I was serious.
Anyway.......yea-looking forward to Ramsey and his famous quotes and tantrums.

If that guy makes Ramsey look so tame, then he must be quite a handful! I could never work under anyone who is that assertive and in-your-face. Back in college, I worked at Ruby Tuesday and there was one particular shift leader I detested. She didn't seem to like me for some reason. I never did anything to her. She always was a beeyotch to me. I was so glad when I found out she got transferred to another store.
I wonder whatever happened to Julia, who worked at the Waffle House in Atlanta. She was supposed to go to culinary school; I wonder if she took the offer. She was one of the most unforgettable contestants.
