I lived in NJ for a while with relatives, and I dated a hardcore Italian from Lawn Guyland and let me tell you, THEY ARE ALL ABOUT APPEARANCES AND SHOWING FAMILY UNITY. Like, culturally, they feel great SHAME if they bash members of their family publicly and they go to great lengths to conceal their family's dirty laundry IN PUBLIC.
what about "jimmy d" (real name: jimmy d'ambrosio, patti's client from The Millionaire Matchmaker). he didn't hide the fact he and his father had tension. i don't remember details but he didn't seem to care about showing family unity.
You will find exceptions to every rule, but in general, that's how Jersey/New York Italians are. Speculating, I would say that the closer they are to being immigrants (1st generation, 2nd generation like Teresa), the more they're that way.
It seems that whenever Bravo is casting, they turn to their current cast members, and look at their relatives and friends - even really casual friends. It's not at all surprising that they would want to expand Teresa's family on the show, since they already have sister-in-laws Caroline and Jacqueline, and they previously had Caroline's sister as a regular cast member. They've kind of tapped out that family, so it was either look to Teresa's family, or introduce someone entirely new?
As for Bravo not knowing about the family tension - all families have tensions - and knowing Teresa, and how dramatic she is, it's a pretty safe bet that there's lot of family drama with her relatives!
I also agree with some of the other posters, that this is the kind of family drama that will be easily solved in time for the finale. Brother Joe and Melissa are all upset because Teresa ignores them? Easy to fix! Teresa is all upset because brother Joe and Melissa diss her? Easy to fix! The only drama that may not get resolved this season is brother Joe's preoccupation with the relationship Teresa's husband has with his father. That kind of jealousy is tough to get over, especially in front of all the cameras.
I saw somewhere (but can't remember where ) that Bravo preferred to have family members/close friends on the show because it created more drama.
does anyone here like Lysa? notice things went downhill the moment she screamed to Teresa: "ONE side! ONE side!"
to me, the mystery of this entire season is: who really, deep down, is "the poison"? Teresa's brother says it's her husband. maybe all 4 of them are "the poison".
Teresa is on the cover of a magazine this week - and it's worth clicking, just to see the photo of her in the animal print bathing suit, circa 1989! Very funny!
