I watched GL for years and years. I think I finally gave up on the show when they had Clone Reva and started the whole mob storyline. It makes me sad that GL is being cancelled but I'm not surprised really. Whenever I turned it on, I didn't recognize anyone and it seemed like they had really gotten away from the core families.
I was home sick for a day a couple of weeks ago and tuned into the show. It looked like they had finally gone back to the old families and I was surprised to see familiar faces and characters that I recognized even if they were played by new actors.
I really doubt the economy can be blamed for this outright. The soap genre has been slowly dying for the last few years. The storylines have been awful and, let's face it, GL's filming was horrible work at best. It looked like a high school video project. With so many viewers tuning out, revenue from advertisers has come to a trickle (why advertise when no one's watching).
Sadly, the soap genre has a captive audience, but they don't seem to know what to do with themselves as of late. The clock is ticking on Days of Our Lives too. I give that show another 8-10 months before we hear the plug is getting pulled on it also.
Simply put "times have changed". I go way back to remembering the radio days of soaps. Today I even avoid some prime time dramas because they are getting much like soap operas.
