I'm still depressed! I can't understand how people can live like that.

Drew and Jessica were spot on with the roles. However, when I saw the documentary, (as another poster said,) I could not stop thinking about it for days. I found the actual footage vs a scripted movie (which took alot of liberty), though entertaining, did not have the same haunting and fascinating effect on me as did the original. I think Little Eddies serious mental issues were never addressed by Big Eddie. I wonder if she could have lived a "normal" life had she been on medication or in treatment.

I didn't see the documentary ... was the home as filthy as the HBO movie depicted? I understand the folie a deux but don't understand why a family member, other relatives or the state didn't do something ... not about Grey Gardens but to help the two women. Such a sad existence.

If you watch the documentary I would have to say the home was in a WORSE state than the movie showed.

It seems to me that both Edie's suffered from some sort of mental illness that went beyond mere eccentricity. It's a shame neither of them had those issues addressed, but in that era, mental health problems were largely ignored.

I too often wonder how they ended up in such a state when they were surrounded by so many WEALTHY relatives and in the Hamptons no less... but it happened.

I thought this was a movie that is going to be shown at the movie theaters. Did I miss it? I really wanted to see it!

Does anyone know who is showing the documentary or if it is available for rent at the video store, I have not ever seen anything about the documentary.

Yes, the documentary is available for rental. I got mine at Netflix.

I would suggest 'Grey Gardens' first. There is a sequel (extra footage) called "The Beals of Grey Gardens".

In those days mental illness was ignored and swept under the carpet very often.
