Is it just me, or do there seem to be lots (I mean lots) of shows about making cake lately?
Is making cake really that interesting and entertaining? Do people really want to see all the drama behind the scenes of cake making?
First there was that Food Network contest show where teams would compete to make big-ass elaborate cakes. It was on for the past few years, and mildly entertaining, mostly when someone would drop and destroy their cake when moving it to the judging table.
Then it got a little crazy...
We have Cake Boss, about a cake-making expert, his cake place, the cakes they make and the drama behind the scenes.
Then we have Ace of Cakes, which is, um, about a cake-making expert, his cake place, and, um, the cakes they make and the drama behind the scenes.
Then you can watch Last Cake Standing, when I guess people or teams compete to make big-ass elaborate cakes. Maybe some of those get dropped and destroyed.
Then on Food Network Challenge, you still can see many, many challenges involving making cakes.
Then there's some Amazing Wedding Cakes show, where you see cake experts making cakes for bitchy brides, and all the behind-the-scenes drama.
These aren't all on the Food Network either; the cake drama craze had crept into other networks and channels. You can't escape it.
I HATE that the word "fondant" is now part of my vocabulary!
Can someone clue me in as to what is soooo interesting about making cakes?
It seems to me Cake Boss is just a bunch of obnoxious New Yorkers who make cakes. Don't think it's that interesting to hear people fight all the time about a cake.
Totally agree OP. Was thinking about this just a couple of nights ago when the kids and I were in a desperate search for good TV and flipping channels.
I think I'd rather watch them actually do something constructive...ie:make cakes than watch all these other completely stupid "reality" shows.
Examples:
Repo Man
Big Brother
Jon and Kate
I'm a celebrity get me out of here.
And on and on and on.
Why cake? Why not a show about making hot dogs? Or pizza?
All of these ridiculous "reality" shows are a sign that we have way too many TV channels anymore. If it wasn't for needing cable to watch Phillies games, I couldn't care less if I even had cable.
