Default Why Red = Leader?

I was wondering, does anyone have any idea why in many shows, the leader is often the one wearing red? I know the tradition originated in Super Sentai in the 1970s (which was eventually dubbed into Power Rangers in the United States in 1993).

If you have noticed, the Red Ranger is usually the leader in Power Rangers. Other shows where the leader wears red include Voltron's Commander Keith (a 1980s show based on the Super Sentai-based anime Golion), and Blossom in The Powerpuff Girls (okay, her dress is pink, but she wears a red bow).

Does anyone know a particular reason for this?
