Because they created and or produced the shows.

I'm glad someone else has noticed this!! ALWAYS a British "judge" on reality TV! I mentioned to my mom (who grew up partially in England, BTW) that Americans or American TV seems to have some complex about enjoying being yelled at by someone with a British accent. Hmmm...and don't forget, it's not just the shows like "America's Got Talent" (AMERICA'S got talent? Why are 2 of the 3 judges British?) and "American Idol." Don't forget "Super Nanny" and the old(ish) game show "The Weakest Link." There doesn't seem to be any presenter/host/judge exchange program between the USA and the UK--or IS there?

Another reason I thought of just now: perhaps the producers/directors are paying homage to British TV with the British judges because most of the reality TV shows we have here were originally created in the UK.
