see that's why you should never throw anything away

I have a friend from college who is a hoarder, and she has serious OCD, washing her hands over and over. I think this goes hand in hand. I do think they have some meds. If you got your daughter help now itd be better then later if she grew up and become a hoarder.

It does go hand in hand. She does take med's. Her anxiety level has gone down, tremendously, on the med's, but it didn't take away from her hoarding stuff. OCD requires medication AND therapy. Being a stubborn teenager, she refuses to go to therapy (tried it a few times and quit). Thinks she can handle it on her own. Maybe when she gets older, she'll have a change of heart and decide to go to therapy again.

Oh thats too bad, sounds like youve gotten her help. Maybe you could try a different therapist she gets on with better? Like female counselor instead of male. It is a lot to handle. Does she wash hands and other stuff like that? have any Aspergers traits?

She doesn't have a hand washing ritual, THANK GOD. Right now, she has a re-reading and re-writing ritual, that affects her schoolwork and homework. She also has a bathroom ritual where she has to wipe herself a certain amount of times until it feels 'right'. I go through A LOT of toilet paper. Oh, and the hoarding stuff. Those are the only rituals I am aware of. She had a lot more when she was younger but she overcame them. I'm sure there may be more rituals, but OCD'ers usually don't like to share that information with ordinary people. Only with their therapists.

I caught a repeat of one of the episodes recently and was shocked by how these people live, especially the lady who had five refrigerators and freezers full of rotten food! How do people get that way? Hoarding edible food is one thing - many people who lived through the Great Depression and Potato Famine have been known to hoard food - but why keep rotten food around that you can't eat and attracts disease? That insect repellant strip full of dead flies hanging in her living room made me want to hurl. I didn't see much in the way of psychological help given to these people, and they definitely need it.
This is a fascinating albeit voyeuristic show. Will there be new episodes soon?

Glad to hear it she has over come some. One thing I want to tell you, I am glad your daughter has parent that cares. Many parents will ignore or only yell at a kid with OCD, and they learn to hide it, and get worse with problems beyind the scenes. One thing with OCD I learned sometimes the more perfection desired the worse it gets.

I thought the food hoarding lady, was one of the most mentally ill. They did say she had been severely poor before and had no food, I think that triggered it. I have been severely poor, [may do a thread on this] and I had to go without food, I went to a couple food pantries and welfare in my state wouldnt help me [forget the reasons back then because I had no children and was not disabled yet]. I still remember the week, I had nothing to eat but a carton of eggs and loaf of bread and going to Save-A-Lot to eat very cheap ramen noodles--like lower brand of them, mixed with cans of tuna, and some applies. By the way, serious lack of food can mess up the metabolism.
So while I think she is very mentally ill, I can understand what triggered it. They should have been focused on putting that woman in a hospital and taking stress off of her and teaching her to live and getting her medicated rather then cleaning the house up. Old food disgusts me. I am even disgusted that I bought some cider from a small veggie stand, and it turned "hard" only 1 day after I bought it, and I sat there happily drinking it, I think it made me slightly buzzed. I am paranoid about food poisoning I got so sick from a bad piece of chicken in my dorm in college, that if anything even smells slightly off I throw it out.

Did anyone watch the season premiere of Hoarders last night and if so, what did you think of Ms. Augustine?
I'm still speechless about the whole episode, to be frank. I mean, wow. Just wow.

I did and I was horrified. Ms Augustine seemed to me to be out of it I think there is a servere mental problem there. The pictures of her in earlier years showed a very pretty woman but something bad must have happened along the way.
