Stargate Universe
Anyone watch this?
I was quite pleasently suprised. It has a much more gritty feel than any of the Stargates. Their only mission is survival, but one wonders how that works out. It has more the grit of the first few seasons of SG1, but feels darker, more like BSG. They are stranded far away like Atlantis, but I never felt as if the new Atlantians were really cut off, with the light tone. I'm hoping for some good stuff from this show.
The hand held camera work was up there with that on The Unit and BSG as well. I'll be looking forward to this one.

I watched it.
I didn't watch SG1, I didn't watch Stargate Atlantis (I did give it a chance, but I just couldn't get into it).
So I was hoping that SGU would be a little more inviting to those of us who haven't been a part of the Star Gate story. (I did watch the movie, but still)
Personally, I felt it wasn't that good. Characters I couldn't really relate to, and a story line that bordered on the absurd.
Its got one more episode, and if it doesn't get better from there, I'm done with it.

Continutity wise, it follows the mythos established in SG1 and Atlantis about the Ancients. So while so far at least you don't have to know all the details, the story follows what has been set very well. No big gaping continutity holes like Star Trek is occasionally prone to. The difficuluty with well established back story is that it is harder to get into. They have to dance a fine line between those who aren't familiar with the lore and those who want more.
For a large cast they did a good job of introducing the backstories. I like that they aren't high ranking officers but the guy who survived who are featured. It has quite a few echos of BSG in that and certainly in the darker approach and mood. It may take more than a couple of episodes to get involved with it. This was only part one of one episode so you really can't judge well with only the pilot.

I totally agree on the BSG shout outs! Complete with a Baltar character. I was pretty well on board from the opening scenes. I will watch again since Caprica is still some time away.

I hadn't thought about the Baltar character but it fits. I also like the daughter who is neither military or a scientist but along for the ride with dad. She should be quite interesting.
I suspect that this show is aimed more at BSG fans than atlantis fans. That one was reasonably interesting at the end but I didn't even watch the last season of SG1. This one is truely removed from both. On Atlantis they knew that SG command knew where they went. The scene when the idea that Star Gate command would not find them and they had to live that way is so much more a tie to BSG than any of the stargate series.
I've seen the Caprica movie and can't wait. It should be a perfect companion piece with BSG and fill in some holes we hadn't before.

If you had watched the original shows then you probably would like it more. This is really aimed at people who are already very familiar with the background and history of the SGC and therefore don't need a lot of explaining and back story. Whilst I miss our usual characters a lot, I'm glad they're keeping the SGC world going.
P.S. To fans of the original series, does anyone think Sam and Jack ever got together? I always remember in one of the episodes when Ba'al was on earth that Sam told the FBI guy that she "wasn't really available" despite having broken off her engagement.

I am a total SG geek and love every aspect of this story. Even though the stories are starting to be pretty much the same. SG team is in trouble must find solution. Solution being resources or a weapon to fight off a powerful enemy.
I really hope they start move away from that kind of story line but even if they dont I will still watch the show since the way the lore is I find really interesting.

If I remember correctly the only time they kinda hooked up was in the episode where Jack hooked up with the alt Sam. They just kept the whole Jack/Sam thing hovering but never followed through with it.

Seems like a mix between SG/Voyager/BSG. I liked it though. I was really surprised to see Christopher McDonald playing a noble, self sacrificing character. He usually just plays complete tools.
I was disappointed though because it seems like Lou Diamond Phillips isn't going to be a regular character. The world needs some more LDP, IMO.

Looking at the trailers for upcoming episodes he's either coming back or appearing in flashbacks - I can't tell

Doesn't really seem to have that much in common with it--except that they have a 'gate. That they can't use to get back to Earth.
Hey, did anyone notice that the daughter of the politician was really into her wine?
