Westhou, he wasn't trying to make fun of black preachers just southern ones. I actually saw that one. Harry is from the South and has helped to raise money on many levels for blacks and recognize African Americans and the state of their life in Louisiana. He is a good man and I truly believe he doens't see color. Don't know how he can when most of his friends are black.

thrifylefty, did the Black performers in Australia have to perform in blackface? I'm not sure if those that went to Europe had to either.

Think what you want but there was a time in this country (not so long ago), when people made fun of Jews, Italians, Irish, etc., etc., and yes - black people too! They all laughed at themselves and each other and nobody got their panties in a knot.
Comedians were a heck of a lot funnier in those days.
People just need to get over themselves.

Wessthou, They can't possibly call him a hypocrite. He was in Australia where he doesn't know if anything from there will make the news here. Most of the times it doesn't and he stuck up for blacks because that is what he felt (many actors or actresses wouldn't have said a thing). He knows better than anybody that appearing in black face is never ok and his skit on SNL doesn't come close to what the Australians did. Harry is a representative of us, America and he didn't go with the punch line when it came down to demeaning fellow country men.
Oh, by the way this reminds me of when Ted Danson showed up in black face. That bad press he got ended the relationship with Whoopie. Although, at the time her dumb behind thought it was funny.

good question originally they didn't, only after the white imitators used black face , the black performers used it , they were in affect blacks imitating whites imitating blacks.
Unfortunately the term "minstrels" has a bad connotation associated with black face, but Minstrels entertainers were the very beginning of the American stage and theater and popular song writing. They were simply small traveling performing troupes. |

Funny, though, or maybe not, that the jokes about Jews, Italians, etc, ceased to be as funny. Now you don't hear them as much...but Black folks are always good for a laugh in any bar. It sure gets tiresome. J
there just aren't enough Anglo jokes to go around.
