I honestly think it's due to competition. There is more competition now. People watch Jimmy Kimmel, John Stewart and Colbert. Also there are the animated sitcoms and cartoons on several channels with the same edgy and sarcastic humor. And even the networks carry shows in prime time that have Conan-like humor such as the 30 Rock and the Office. In the past, you didn't have a lot of options and Conan was really the only show like that aside from Southpark and the Simpsons. You didn't have youtube or sites where you could watch programming that was on the previous night. I remember in the 90's, friends and I would get together and watch Conan or talk about it the next day. Now there is so much similar programming that you would never talk about something like that the next day because it's not longer unique or edgy.

At some level, to most folks this has to become a bit boring.
We are not our parents generation. They are trying the Carson formula and that worked for a while with Leno but as our population ages, no one cares to watch a host kiss his guest's a$$ and only ask questions about their upcoming film or show. We have so many more options for late night television and with the advent of DVR, we can watch a show we recorded right before going to bed as opposed to settling on Carson, Leno, Letterman, Conan etc
