The reason Simon Cowell worked so well isn't because of his directness or his snark, but because everyone knew he was saying those things because it was
his label that would be signing the winner and
he was going to have to work with them. That's why in a 4-way tie, his vote carried more weight and was actually a tie
breaker. Without that aspect in play, the judging loses something that separated this show from many of the others.
