Whether or not the new Hawaii 5-0 will be any good is anyone's guess. Cast is decent so far. But the quality of a series tends to hang upon the quality of the directing and writing. Honestly though, I think the original series is way overrated. One of the best theme songs ever, to be sure, but the show itself isn't the untarnished classic so many people seem to remember. It was a good show. But not great.
The original Hawaii 5-0 doesn't look like much now, but in its day it was a very high-quality program. So few shows then were shot on any location other than a Hollywood studio lot. They had a big budget and they spent it on photography and good guest stars. Actors who became staples of 1970s and '80s TV dramas had their first big roles on H5-0 and many old-time movie stars had their first small-screen roles on that show.
While we don't think anything today of cop shows focusing on the "why" of crime, Hawaii 5-0 was one of the first shows to include such things as a criminal psychologist and a forensics specialist. It was certainly the first time in my young life I had ever seen crimes like arson and drug abuse pictured on a cop show as possible psychological problems. On a medical series, maybe, but not a law-and-order shoot 'em up. They also had multiple shows that were sympathetic to issues surrounding the then-hot-button situation in Vietnam.
If you pay close attention to how many of today's popular crime dramas (CSI Miami and NCIS, for example) are filmed -- not to mention how their lead actors behave -- you can see the stylistic debt they owe to Hawaii 5-0.
As a result of his TV success, plus family wealth, Jack Lord had a huge fortune. His only child predeceased him and he left the bulk of his estate to a scholarship fund for Hawaiian youth. He might not have been much of an actor, but he was a well-educated man who also painted. He spent much of his life in Hawaii and apparently his love for the islands wasn't faked.
I think the major difference between old and new Hawaii 5-0 will be the number of things that are going to get "blowed up real good," as they used to say on SCTV. And let's hope this Danno has more than two expressions.
I think Daniel Dae Kim was also an excellent choice. I don't know if the show will have a longevity, it all depends on how good the writing is, but the cast looks really interesting.

Yep, great choice on Kim! I also like Scott Caan in here too. Executive Producer Alex Kurtzman was behind 2009's "Star Trek" which was pretty successful. Guess we'll see how it goes.....
Great post, Jukes. I did not know that about Jack Lord coming from money. I new he loved Hawaii and that was wonderful of him to leave the bulk of his estate to the Hawaiian youth. I also did not remember his child dying before him. I was kind of young in the 60's. What I do remember was he was a drinker.(listening to my parents)
I wasn't going to watch Hawaii 5-O but I think I will give it a shot. Watching the orchestra record the theme song got me interested. I loved "Moonlight" but I'm not so sure about Alex O'Laughlin as McGarret. I'm glad to see James Caan's kid and Daniel Dae Kim will be on it.
I was in Waikiki last week and they had the series premiere right on the beach--the stars walked the red carpet & a couple actors from the original series were there, as well as the governor of Hawaii! Unfortunately because it was so packed w/people it was impossible to see or hear the show, so didn't stick around long...seemed to get good feedback though.
All I have to say is alex O'loughlin.....HOTTIE.....and the reason I'm checking out the series.
