I was born in Tyler and raised in the country outside Van, until I went off to college. It is a GREAT area for families and to raise a kid...friendly people, minimal crime, good schools all around. There are nice and affordable things to do in/near Tyler: Caldwell Zoo, Brookshires World of Wildlife, Lake Tyler/Lake Palestine/Tyler State Park, Canton for First Monday Trades Days, Discovery Science Place, Splash Kingdom Water Park in Canton, close to Shreveport/Bossier City for the casinos, close to Dallas/FW for everything it has to offer, and tons of festivals in all the little towns surrounding Tyler. Tyler Convention and Visitors Homepage Tyler has good restaurants, friendly churches, excellent public and private schools as well as great colleges for undergrad and graduate schools, good medical care, and an affordable cost of living. You can have any style or price-range of house you want and the traffic isn't sooo terrible that if you choose to live outside the city, it won't be a killer to get anywhere within the city.

Good luck with the move! If you have any other questions, feel free to ask. I still have family and land in the Tyler/Van/Canton area and am back there regularly.
