Hi all,
I'm planning on moving to Puerto Rico from the mainland in a few months to be near my fiance and his job. He is from Peru and speaks fluent Spanish, I only speak some but am learning more. I don't mind Island time...it kinda suits me. What I need to know is how much an efficiency or 1 bedroom apartment is gonna run me? Also, how hard is it to get internet and utilities set up? What kind of documentation do I need to become a resident and get a drivers license? We will most likely need a place close to one of the major ports since he works on a cruise ship. Yeah, I know, scary place to want to live, right? I know this is a lot to ask, but there is a lot to learn. I know I'm being impetuous, but what will a girl do for love? All advice (except "don't do it") will be greatly appreciated.

I just moved here a few months ago so maybe I can help. I'm familiar with San Juan, but not any of the other areas. How much you are going to pay really depends on your standards. In Old San Juan, you can find a studio starting at 550, but it'd basically be a hole in the wall. I decent place in Old San Juan will cost you at least 750 a month...maybe more.
I live in Miramar and pay 650 all bills included and it's a really nice place. About 4 miles from the port area in Old San Juan. Will you have a car? I use the bus. A lot of people have bad things to say about the bus, but I don't mind it. I never wait for more than 20-30 minutes. It's usually more like 15 minutes.
The internet took forever. It literally took 1 month to install upon signing up. Terrible. But the good news, is that the internet is good once you get it installed! You can always go to starbucks or another cafe to use wifi while you wait. What sort of work are you going to be doing? It's difficult to find work without knowing Spanish (from what I've learned, I only know a little Spanish), but there are a lot of online job opportunities if you sniff them out.
Thank you very much. Your insight is very helpful. There is so much to learn and so little time. The bus is going to have to be it for a while. I write children's stories, so I work from home. I'll be starting over from scratch with what will fit in my suitcases when I fly down. I'm not young, but I've relocated plenty of times, Just not somewhere so different.
Hmmm... just be mindful when riding the bus and you should be fine. Try to learn your usual routes quickly. Also, the bus is usually very slow, so take that into consideration if you need to get somewhere on time. Finally, no bus route runs 24/7, so learn when your usual routes begin and stop working.
I really wish you success on your move! Hope everything goes smoothly and don't hesitate to as anything here. I'm sure everyone will pitch in and help some.
I also am planning on the move to the Island. I have found by looking on Craigslist for apartments, they are fairly inexpensive. It truly depends on the area, and what you want out of the apartment. I found a 3 br house for 675 all utilities included. IF YOU CAN GET ALL INCLUSIVE, DO IT. The power and gas in the Islands is quite high if you don't. Have you lived in the Caribbean before? It can be a bit overwhelming to a first time out of the states mentality.
