Conservatives generally oppose the current status more than they oppose statehood. In fact they would love statehood as it means Puerto Ricans having to pay Federal income taxes.

Federal Income taxes? Puerto Ricans might not pay much into federal income taxes under Statehood. Although Puerto Ricans will file the tax forms, most if not all taxes paid will return fully to the new state. Why? Because 60% of the population is below Federal income poverty levels, therefore Puerto Ricans will be allowed INCOME TAX CREDITS. This is what statehooders always have called "EL BONO DE LA ESTADIDAD". This is a great deal for Puerto Ricans but for Washington? I doubt it.
When this comes up in a future state petition, which it will, our tax liability added to cultural issues will give The GOP and its Tea Party congressional members a lot to talk about.

49% of Americans in the 50 states of the Union don't pay Federal income taxes either.

That's still not a reason to accept another group of free loaders while the rest have to pick up the tab.

You might be right. However politics is PERCECEPTION. If the perception is that we are free loaders, that's what polititians will sell Americans when time for a Statehood petition comes. Its very sad, but try to sell Americans ( the GOP , The Tea Party) otherwise, and good luck.
