I'm a missionary planning on moving to Puerto Rico in two to three years.

Our plan is to do ministry mainly with younger adults (college aged, and young professionals/families). We believe this would mean that we would mainly be doing ministry in the Rio Piedras/Hato Rey area.

I was born in Puerto Rico, but have lived in Florida my whole life (though I have visited enough and have enough family there to know what life is like).

My wife and I desire to find a good area that is outside the city yet not too far that the commute would be too drastic. We don't mind a commute that is between 30 minutes to an hour.

We also would prefer a house with enough land to grow our own fruits/vegetables and for entertaining. I've narrowed down places that have peeked my interest to Carolina, Canovanas, Rio Grande, Luquillo, and Aguas Buenas. I don't want to live in Bayamon and my wife isn't too keen on Guaynabo.

What are some of your thoughts here?

A good place to start is Clasificados Online. There, you can look up the houses in the price range and locations you and your family might prefer. A gated community would be your best option, one with a large yard for your garden. I personally like Aguas Buenas because it is in the mountains. However, Luquillo is coastal and convenient regarding travelling as well.

Thanks, boricuarosa. We tend to be fans of both mountains and coast (probably because we have neither in Orlando). I'm attracted to the mountains and the real estate prices in Aguas Buenas, but it looks like there's not really a highway that takes you there. It looks to me like it's just local roads to get there which makes me a little nervous, whereas Canovanas, Rio Grande, and Luquillo have Route 66.
