Greetings everyone!

I'm trying to move from the USA (New Jersey) to beach destination. Obviously this is very vague but I've narrowed my options to the US Virgin Islands (St. Thomas in particular) Hawaii, maybe Florida/Cali or possibly Mexico. These options seem the most practical because they are the easiest to obtain working papers, residency, etc. I am a young male (28 years old) with little to no obligations, so picking up and moving wont be that hard. I have zero debt (student loans, car loans, etc) and plan to have roughly $40,0000 in the bank before i move. These are some of the criteria I'm looking for in my move.

-By the beach either on it or short walk away
-I'm not trying to be isolated so this place should have nightlife, bars, restaurants and things of that nature.
-Defiantly want to be surfing so a beach with waves would be nice
-Outdoor activities such as golf, bike riding, hiking, things of that nature
-Year round nice weather
-Be able to get around either thru public transportation or bike
-Employment opportunities...I currently work in finance and have been for over 4 years but i also have experience doing manual labor (construction), a cook, and private investigator. I also have a bachelor degree in Criminal Justice

If anyone has any information or suggestions on this matter I would defiantly appreciate it. It appears to me one of the biggest issues is finding employment wherever i go. I'm not trying to be a millionaire, just want to live comfortably and embrace the scenery and beach style living

Where the USVI is concerned and St Thomas in particular:

1. Doable. On a small island nothing is too far from anywhere. I live up high on the cool North side and am five minutes away from Hull Bay and 8 minutes away from Magens Bay. Prefer to be on this side and high up for cool breezes and no need for A/C.

2. Plenty of nightlife opportunities on island, active bar scene, etc.

3. Next to no surfing here except on high sea days at the aforementioned Hull Bay. None of the VIs are surfing destinations.

4. One golf course, some hiking - more hiking on St John which is a short ferry ride away. No biking.

5. Yes.

6. Not doable. You need a car here.

7. Plenty of opportunities but not from off island. Hundreds of people every year think of moving here but employers won't even respond to off-island enquiries for the most part. You move then look.

An excellent source of information is the VI Moving Center which is a site specifically designed for those thinking of moving here. You'll find a ton of valuable information there. Good luck!

PS: "Defiantly" and "definitely" mean very different things.

If surfing is high on your list, you'll want to look at California, Hawaii and the west coast of Mexico. Nicest weather would be San Diego (almost perfect all year round), but I don't know what their public transportation is like and it's crazy expensive for housing at the beach.

While it would be tough to beat California or Hawaii for surfing potential there is a rather large surfing community on Floridas east coast particularly around the St Sebastian Inlet area.

Although trying to live the car free lifestyle would be tough in Florida
