Since 2014, have read everything I can find online about STX. Will make our final of three PMV's in July. I know about the crime, and the type of crime. Have you heard about the recent East End Road rape? This is a seemingly new kind of STX crime. The attempted Salt River carjacking?
Since 2014, our family of 4 has been planning a move. That move will happen in exactly 1 year. We'll arrive with an 18 year old girl who'll attend college, and a 14 year boy who'll attend private school.
My question is, would you? Would you take your family to that island? The more real it becomes, the more I second guess our decision. Is it reckless to move a family to STX? We don't have to move. It's fully by choice.
newspapers dont sell if they dont report stuff that is "news."
what is news? something different than normal. people being kind to each other, taking care of their kids, holding doors open for each other - is not news. it is normal everyday behavior.
killing, car jacking - now that is news. people being horrible to each other. that is "news"
Already have. Third visit coming next month. I get the place, I know the place. I get the subtleties and nuances of the crimes, who commits them, and who the victims are. Just wondering if other responsible adults would bring an 18 year old girl and 14 year old boy (plus mandatory wife) to this place. Not looking for info, looking for opinions on whether this completely OPTIONAL move is the dumbest idea ever. Psycho therapists would probably say I'm looking for a stamp of approval on this decision. But I'm honestly open to hearing how it's a bad idea. Thanks for the help!
Well, I hope to move to St. Croix in the future. So my answer is yes.
There are really nice areas to live and homes tend to be cheaper snd nicer than on St. Thomas, where I live now. Things happen everywhere. Just exercise commom sense.

Hey WardCleaverJr,
The USVI's are an adventure for sure! Lots of things to appreciate and be amazed by, lots of things to drive you nuts, too! I've lived on STX and still visit for work, regularly.
The only big reason I would have told you not to do it would have been if you were putting your 14-year-old in public school. You're already way ahead of me on that, so I say go for it! Have the adventure! Show your kids that it's totally possible to be brave and go where your heart is calling you! This will also show them that there are different ways to live than what we are shown is the standard brand of life events and success in U.S. culture. Those are GREAT things to share with your family and experience for yourself. Enjoy the beauty of the Caribbean and all of the quirkiness and learning experiences that it will have to offer you. It's not the end of the world if it doesn't end up being the perfect fit or your forever home. You can always move again, if STX loses its luster for you. It sounds so big and scary now, but once you've done it, you'll find that it gets easier and easier to pull up stakes and take on new adventures. I think this has the potential to be a really neat thing for your family. Good luck!!
