the biggest obstacles of statehood are not in Congress or the GOP or whatever gringo boogie man you want to blame ...it's in Puerto Rico....and it comes from the left, socialists and anti-Americans of the PPD and PIP party.......the same movement that got the U.S. Navy base out of Puerto Rico in 2002.

as long that they have political power and the media in P.R. favors them and they control the legislative branch and the majority of the mayors in cities and towns in Puerto Rico and they are supported by the Democrat party then statehood it's a dream.

That’s what I was thinking! Living off the government teat has certainly worked well for many Americans, and Puerto Ricans for a long time, but the gravy train is over. Sometimes what is best for people is the thing they fear the most.

Cool, we'll start by eliminating all Federal funding and assistance for Republican ruled states ... and we'll shut down all their military bases too. Sink or swim!

Sadly obvious that many people think of Puerto Ricans as second class citizens, even more disheartening when the Puerto Rican diaspora feel that way too. For those of you that feel that way realize you've been feeding off a teat as well, the teat of opportunity that living on the mainland affords you.

I'm more than weary of the New Republican mindset but do realize we are a country in transition and that they are on their way out. The constant anger, recriminations and discrimination are actually nothing more than the vocalized death rattle of the GOP as we know it.

Are you getting paid by the Democrat Party? you take this so personal, your simple narrative of Republicans= Bad, Democrats=Good argument is like reading a child.

You never argue about specific policies that affect Puerto Rico or yourself personally and then come here and play the victimization card.

What is a 2nd class citizen? there is only 1 kind of citizen in the U.S. If Puerto Ricans in the island don't want to integrate in the U.S. and keep living in the colonial status and the type of government they choose every 4 years, then who's fault is that?

yeah, it's the boogie man Republican's fault.....I got it.

I hope you don’t think that I do. My dear DIL is from PR and has a wonderful, prosperous family there. I’m a conservative-ish Republican and I think any of them would be a great addition to the mainland. This won’t happen though, because their roots are deep in PR and they have businesses there. Too bad they are not political, but just live their life under the radar. They are the sort of people who could perhaps make a difference. I think the smarter people know they cannot change the current system. The only way it can happen is if the USof A started kicking butt, and taking names. We’ll see a little bit of this during the hurricane aid, but not enough to matter.

How do you know they are 'non political?' I'm guessing they are more politically savvy than you think...
maybe they know how your views about 'sunk or swim' Puerto Rico..and thinking that PR was once an 'Independent Country' and just don't want to offend your sensibilities.

Wow, your patronizing line about how they would be a 'great addition to the mainland'
That is just so sad.

BTW..the expression is 'taking names and kicking butt.' not the opposite like you posted..

Puerto Rico will never become the 51 state, at least not in these times of populism and growing american nationalism. Read the last portion of the sentence again please.

Similar to Europe, the United States will soon question if admitting a Spanish speaking state, which will have more representative power han 26 States, is in their best interest. It will be a Democratic state with 6 electoral votes, enough to swing a tight election towards the Democrats. Not just that, gringos of all persuasions except liberals will start asking, what does Puerto Rico have for us to grant it so much political power ? That’s not the way you play politics.

With countries becoming terrified of having distinct unassimilable enties within their borders, does Cataluña ring a bell? A Puerto Rican state will be a nightmare for nationalist pseudo -

Mod edit: personal attacks are against our TOS.

With WIHS letting down his guard, he let us know that the best thing to happen to Puerto Rico is a DISSOLUTION OF ITS CULTURE by becoming a Hawaii, where it’s population was displaced by immigrants. In our case, according to WIHS, Asians and WHITE GRINGOS.

You cant beat that for SELF HATE RICAN THINK can you? hahahahahahah.
Actually, I'm 100% Gringo ... nothing Hispanic about me.

Also, your post outlines precisely why Puerto Rico statehood is #3 or 4 on the Democrats "to do" list for when they retake Congress ... which could happen as soon as January 2019. They are't going to pass up an opportunity to strengthen their hold. Especially so now that they have the hurricane to use for political gain.

The Republicans? Trumpism will die with Trump ... virtually all of his supporters are his age or older.

WIHS, So there is NOTHING HISPANIC about you?

Then why the obsession with writing on this forum instead of dealing with regular American topics?

I would assume you’ve been integrated or assimilated to a degree that the politics of the old ancestral country doesn’t mean a hoot to you. But I guess not.
