Hmm...where do I begin...sky high crime? Caserios everywhere you turn? Stress-inducing traffic and crazy drivers? High cost of living compared to the rest of the island? Less authentic, all the more Americanized chain loving ¨culture¨? Large amounts of people who refuse to speak in Spanish to non-Latinos? Arrogant upper class that likes to flex its materialistic, exclusive muscle as much as possible?
that's like saying why would anybody live anywhere but NYC when upstate New York is better from schools, crime, cost of living and space. (my opinion)
San Juan is good to visit or work but is not top 5 places I would live in P.R.....I like the west coast on the island. More beautiful and people are nicer.

not a fan of mayaguez but generally like the west coast (the southwest and northwest in particular). I don't find San juan stressful, it's a small city and is pretty manageable. by and large, the chefs are better there and it has more variety. you can even walk between neighborhoods. I'd say different strokes for different folks (and often for the same folks at different times).

San Juan is the biggest city in the island and it has over 395,000 people in a 48 square mile. Is not a small city at all. The traffic alone is stressful and trying to find a parking in the Old San Juan? good luck. You could be hours looking for a spot or just pay the overpriced parking places. It's the most expensive city in the island to rent. That alone could be stressful.
Again, if you have to work in San Juan you do what you have to do but to retired and live, that is Central Puerto Rico up in the mountains or West Coast. San Juan is good to visit for me not to live. Being stuck in traffic everyday just to go from point A to point B in a 48 mile radius takes years out of you and gives you a lot of grey hairs in a very hot and humid place.
