Lol it's nice to see that I have a bunch of people using the posting! I did have another question to mr STT whos been so gracious to me over the past few weeks and also anyone else if they can chime in that would be great!

I am going to be moving there just after christmas to STX and I am getting nervous/excited/parinoid (especially when its snowing 3" right now) and I have been doing alot of reading. Every post I read even including this one I hear horror stories about being robbed, shot, raped (though I think i'm safe on that), and overall a feeling of fear. I am whiter than casper and I do understand that when you are in a diffrent area especially one where you are not familiar with your surroundings it can be a lil uneasy, but if we are talking about myself being shot or stabbed or robbed I'm not digging that. i would really like to hear you folk's input on that. I wish to be assured that it'll be ok and I understand that no matter where you are there are good places and bad places, but reading about people on the "boardwalk" and "walking into their house" being stabbed, robbed and shot, it kinda gets to someone who is moving far away from home.

Please though dont use the term "there is crime in every city and state" because though there is with only 60,000 people on such a small area there has to be something going on. I live just north of minneapolis and there are robberys and stabbings and shootings but really usually its a very isolated and the people know eachother.

Also I do understand how some people can feel about the whole "blacks not liking whites" where I have been reading and it could be one of two things like in ny I was visiting a friend and ny rudeness comes from nyc people pushing and shoving dumb tourist that sit in one spot where everyone is trying to walk. Or there could be hey this is my land get off it. so idk getting a bit more on edge while writing this as you can see how I am rambling!

i'm off because I'll keep typing so if someone could get back to me and hopefully I havent burned out mr STT that would be great!!

THANKS!

Fact: The US virgin islands has one of the highest unsolved murer rates under the american flag rivaling that of New orleans an Chicago. Thats close to a quote from the front page of the daily news a few years ago. St. Croix is especially natorious. Bussiness leave... i talked to a guy in STT who sai he moved his pizza shop off STX because he said "it was like vietnam down there"

But on the side of STX when i talked to college student from the STX campus on the STT campus they had the same bad rumors about STT. They even had their own rumors about St. John being from by the KKK (stemming from an incident where some ones gift shop got burned down on STJ) which i did my best to let them know THATS NOT TRUE.

But since you brought up being raped and you said you didnt think that would happen to you i will bring up this case which made headlines for a week. A college student (male) walking down a remote part of the beach on the edge of campus was raped at shotgun point.

My girlfriend's uncle was also shot in STX because he apparently took some one's job as a roofer. There was a point when they had their cruis ships taken away. Did they ever get them back STT res? I think they were about to when i left island.

As far as staying out of trouble you are going to have to learn that out for yourself. There are plenty of places you dont go to after dark or even in the day for that matter. Dont trust anyone. There are people who feed off the fare skinned new comers. You will stick out like a sore thumb.

I had a terrible anxiety when i first moved to STT as a kid. Fear and judgement will keep you safe until you learn for yourself. Make lots of friends. With everybody! Go to a local bar on the north shore (local for north north shore people, some will know what i mean) and meet everyone. After several years you may even end up with your own shady friends like me lol.

The most important thing is to keep your nose clean. The VI's can be a helluva place...

Thoughts STT resident?

Fairbanks101: I choose not to get into a discussion on crime rates and statistics in the Virgin Islands as this has been a subject hashed about in many different forums over many years and everybody has their own opinion from the rabid statistician to the visitor who left his camera in the rental vehicle while he was swimming and it was stolen. Statistics can be read many different ways and likewise interpreted.

The majority of murders in the Virgin Islands are related to drugs. Drug dealers who kill each other generally don't move in a crowd generally disposed to cooperating with the police. Conversely, other murders generally are solved relatively quickly. Unfortunately here, as elsewhere, if resolution doesn't happen as fast as a 60 minute slot of "Law and Order" the rumbling starts!

As far as businesses leaving, people with stars in their eyes come here all the time to set up a business in "Paradise" and the majority of them (particularly in the food/bar business) are gone in a flash. This has NOTHING to do with crime but those who fail and scurry back to the mainland often feel the need to make up an excuse to account for their failure rather than simply admit that they chased a dream and didn't have a clue what they were doing where the islands and business are concerned.

As for Voice from St Croix's comment about the roads and driving, that's ludicrous.

Guzjon66, I sent you a direct message with some more information. Cheers!

STT Resident. I have been reading your posts to jon and I have to say that I am very impressed by all the info that you are providing. I have been researching VI for a few months now and plan on moving there(st.Croix,) in another 5 or so yrs(if finances allow). I have been trying to find as much info as possible from anywhere i can and it seems like some ppl are secretive with their info at times. I am originally from JA and now reside in NY(18yrs and counting). I miss the islands and want to return asap but I will not play the fool and just pick up and leave without doing my hmwk or saving my pennies. Thank You for being so informative, upfront and unbiased.
