Has anyone on this forum gone? I was thinking of going to Santo Domingo for a week to relax, and buy stuff at the new IKEA with the gf.
Obviously I'd take my own car so I have to drive to Mayaguez then take the ferry. My question is, how big of a hassle is temporarily importing your car to the Dominican Republic and how big of a hassle are customs back in Mayaguez. I've never taken the ferry (The 2 times I've been to Santo Domingo I've flown).
If the IKEA in Santo Domingo is any good, I'll be bringing back a lot of boxes. Is that going to be a big problem?
And I guess my other question is: Why Santo Domingo and not PR for the first IKEA in Latin America? or ... Why Santo Domingo and not ANYWHERE ELSE for the first IKEA in LatinAmerica.
Well the cool thing about my car is i can put the seats down in the back so the the trunk extends into the cabin. Most furniture, incuding the huge bookcase, comes unassembled in boxes, so they dont take up a lot of room.

That's great! It's fun shopping there because they have such great prices.
Well I that could be blamed on high transportation costs for such bulky items, but more than likely it has to do with the Dominican Republic's archaic tax structure. Like elsewhere in Latin America, goods that are considered 'luxuries' or that could be produced locally are taxed sometimes at 100%. (Have you ever gone to an electronics store in Santo Domingo and seen the ipod at $400.?)
This is why, whenever I have company from Santo Domingo, Venezuela, Colombia, other places in Latin America, etc... they always want to go shopping.
I have compared both catalogs (US and DR) and yes, it's more expensive in Santo Domingo. Specially for big items. Small pieces or bookcases are around 10% higher.
I was there last week and the store is as big as any other in USA.
