So if Reid doesn't pass an unemployment extension he'll be voted out in Nevada. His unemployment rate is high and he will lose.

Reid, by his actions, seems to be less concerned about the unemployed than he lets on. At least that's how it appears to me.

For a guy who supposedly champions helping the unemployed, he's about the most uncooperative politician in the Senate.

(1) All the recent news reports about the next vote on unemployment benefits refer to the need for 60 votes for passage -- of the two bills in the Senate providing unemployment benefits, only HR 4213 requires 60 votes for passage.

(2) Of course, Reid can introduce HR 5618 for a vote -- but he has been delaying the initial process necessary before the bill can be officially introduced in the Senate.
History of HR 5618:
06/28/2010 - HR 5618 introduced in the House.
07/01/2010 - HR 5618 passed by the House and sent to the Senate.
07/13/2010 - Senate officially acknowledges receipt of HR 5618; bill read once.
07/14/2010 - HR 5618 read second time; still not assigned to a Senate Committee for vetting.

It seems apparent that Reid intends to focus on HR 4213, probably for the reason noted by this poster:

Do you know the position that Reid's Republican opponent has taken on unemployment benefits -- eliminate them.

In a recent interview, Reid's Republican opponent Sharron Angle said that: "what we need to do is make that unemployment benefit go down," as right now, "we're making [people] make a choice between unemployment benefits and going back to work and working up through the ranks of that job and actually building up a good wage again. There are jobs that do exist," concluded Angle. "That's what we're saying, is that there are jobs."

Well how would he get 60 votes for 4312 if he couldn't before? Won't the house shoot it down?

Reid is claiming he is only one vote short for passage of HR 4213 -- and presumably that vote would be supplied by the Democratic Senator who will be named to fill the seat of the late Robert Byrd.

As for how the House will react to whatever else is in HR 4213 when they get it back -- that's anyone's guess.

But, I thought Collins and Snowe only wanted a "stand-alone" bill? I may be wrong, but if that's the case, wouldn't they be counted out?

Reid claims to have made peace with them -- and says he has their votes. Who knows if that's true -- or if it is true, if it will remain so. Afterall, Reid's betrayed them in the past by not making changes in other bills that he'd promised.
