Well then it sounds like he is trying to get UE to pay for your down time using the justification that the company has paid into it.

That could raise a red flag to unemployment as to what is going on at your place.

Do you know when exactly in Sept. you would start back up?

We're already halfway through August(hard to believe) and your still working. This might come back to bite him.

Many places just shut down and everyone takes their vacation during that time, since he owes you and your coworkers the time anyway he should really just do that rather than try and pull a fast one with unemployment.

And we all have accrued vacation days, personal days and floating holidays that we could be using now to fill in our empty work weeks, but our general manager is refusing to let us use them, he just wants us to collect unemployment. He wants our pay to not come from his budget. But when it's busy, he doesn't want us to take our vacation time either.

I am just venting since it's only a couple of weeks until September and work picks up again, so I'd rather use up my various paid vacation and personal days to get by instead of filing for unemployment benefits for having low earnings. I also think that those that are completely unemployed need the UE fund money more than we do.

Some of my co-workers and I are planning to meet with our union representative next week to see if we can force our boss to let us have our vacation days.
Nice that you have a union. Sad that they don't represent you properly. They're only as good as you allow them to be. People never think of Unions and what they can do until they're in dire need of representation.

Do you have a right to vacation- not in America. Welcome. In most states you're not even guaranteed breaks, believe it or not. In Texas we're not even guaranteed a lunch break- it's all at the employers good graces.

Personally, I think your idea is ridiculous. Morality/ethics aside, the thought that you have some legal right to vacation/pay is astounding to me.

Push your unions, hard. You should be concerned about them year-round, and always involved. You're so lucky to have such representation, and if it's not the representation YOU want, then you should do something about it.

I wish we had such here in Texas.

Well, if your work is regularly understaffed, as you say, and manager is foisting your "vacation" pay off on the government, I guess we can all see why yours is the highest earning division.

And I expect that with his recent recognition for being "the best" and the pressure of showingeven more profit from the new renovation and cafe, your boss is going to grow into a petty dictator here pretty quickly.

I say nip that **** in the bud. It's good the workers are going to their union, but you guys better make sure the union acts decisively and puts this guy in his place.
