Well, Post Office will be laying off 120,000 soon per CNBC today. We are now getting our mail at home at 5:30 p.m. - whereas previously it would be delivered by 11 a.m. Old retired mail carriers, subs, never the same one twice.

Hey - maybe that's tomorrow's mail arriving 1 day early?
[Edit] They're running ads to drum up junk mail business. Maybe they could try delivering newspapers too...

Saturday at 5:30 they delivered one piece of crap mail. Yesterday at 5:30, I got more flyers and junk.
I could live without the Saturday delivery. I still get all bank, investment, credit card statements in the mail. Don't like risking internet/computer failure when I want to lay my hands on something. Came in very handy few months ago. I love my paper.
Sad about USPS. My dad was a postal worker until he died in 1968. He eventually became a station supervisor. In the days when those civil service jobs weren't considered so blue collar and we lived in a better world.

3 days a week would be fine with me. But of course that's just the last link in the chain - the weekly amount of behind-the-scenes work doesn't change, although I think some centralization would also take place at the expense of an occasional extra day in route...
I've gone paperless. A MAJOR bank was still sending me 1099's with my full SSN on the front and back of every page. I don't like the idea of stuff like that sitting in my mailbox when some kid I never saw before is going around the neighborhood putting flyers in mailboxes.

It could be that the population dropped by the same amount of lost jobs. Regardless, I also do not believe the official numbers either. Shadowstats puts the national unemployment rate at 23%.

True - sometimes you have to really dig into the data to figure out how they come up with the numbers. Unemployed leaving the state, or just dropping out of the workforce, can lower the rate. And there can be some other minor anomalies such as people working multiple part-time jobs - if they lose one, that's 1 job lost, but the person does not become unemployed.
This might be a little OT but it's definitely employment-related:
I read an interesting twist on the health reform bill the other day. Say you and an acquaintance each own a similar business with 50 full-time employees. You will each have to provide HI, or pay a penalty of $50K or so. BUT you could share the 100 employees - you each give them 20 hours/week - and you each save the $50K. There's also concern that a Subway, say, that's part of a multi-unit ownership with too many total employees will have trouble competing with the stand-alone Subway down the street. Not to mention that the stand-alone operator has a big disincentive to expand beyond the threshold of 50 employees...

Some kid just tossed a telephone book on my porch. It's about time - it's been over a week since I got the last one. I live in fear of the time when both my ISP and directory assistance will be down and all I'll have is an obsolete 10-week-old telephone book to look up a number. I read about that actually happening to someone in Somalia in the 1930's and it got pretty ugly. But more to the point, why doesn't the USPS deliver telephone books?

These last two days have left me wondering whether people in this country can survive given what the circumstances are. If there is a rise in unemployment claims that I just read, that is not a good sign at all. I'm seeing less and less jobs being available other than the kinds of jobs that require years of experience. It is getting tough to be positive around here
