Default Will He Qualify???

My son was laid off in September 2010 and searched high and low for a job. He found a much lower paying job 2 weeks later and accepted it rather than claim unemployment benefits in Massachusetts. He can not pay his half of the rent and eat, has had to have his credit card put on a payment plan and put his car off the road since he can't afford to pay his car insurance.

Now his roommate has purchased a home and without a roommate he will end up homeless. The struggle to make ends meet is just overwhelming and I have finally convinced him to come home for a while and try to re-start his life here in Charlotte NC. Can he give his current employer 2 weeks notice and file for unemployment benefits? He absolutely can not live in Massachusetts on his income and needs to leave the state ... what can he do?
