I was doing some investigation on the rules and regulations regarding unemployment claims. Many people travel while collecting unemployment benefits. (They don't have to ask a boss for the time off)

Because you are suppose to be ready and able to work at a moments notice to be eligible for benefits, the State unemployment office does not think kindly of people who are traveling while collecting unemployment.

So anyway, if you google the term: "traveling while collecting unemployment benefits" there are all kinds of horror stories about people whose jobless benefits are flagged when they apply online using a computer in another State or Country. I understand the unemployment office will track the IP Address of the computer you use to collect benefits and flag your claim as fraud if you are more than a hundred miles from home.

Have you ever submitted your unemployment claim while traveling out of State or overseas?

I filed in AZ while I was attending a funeral in FL. I suspected there might be some kind of tracking by IP or caller ID, but didn't know it for a fact. While gone, I used my cellphone with an AZ area code to file by phone for the time I was gone to avoid this potential problem.

New York State has instituted tracking for online and phone claims. It will permit claims from Canada and certain US Territories, but not Europe. NY has identified, investigated and suspended benefits. Some threads on the out of country claiming, here:

Back in Oct 2009 I applied for TX UI benefits while vacationing in France. I did apply for jobs too. And they didn't track me. Never got in trouble.

But now I'd hold off a vacation until after my benefits are over.

How would they know whether or not you simply traveled to another state for a job interview, or maybe you wanted to check out an area before applying for employement there?

You are suppose to contact the unemployment office and ask permission to travel to the Out of State area. Seriously! And if they audit your job search they will want lots of information on your Out of State Interview.

If you apply out of the country and use an out of the country computer (which will show in the IP Address) you will be audited for possible fraud.

Yes, I know this is silly, but they have people who look into this!

Have you ever submitted your unemployment claim while traveling out of State or overseas?

Why were you looking at the travel and availability for work rules?

And are you suggesting HONEST people would file a claim for unemployment, while say, vacationing in Aruba?

Have you been traveling or contemplating doing so? Be honest.

No, the OP just likes to look pick on the unemployed.

He assumes everyone is "pulling a fast one".

The only time I was on UE benefits was in CA, I applied online and that was the ONLY interaction that was ever done on a computer.

The rest was done through the mail. And for the record I was never on vacation or out of CA while on UE.
