Default Laid off for 1st time...apply online or in person?

Silly me, I didn't see there was a separate unemployment forum...

I just got laid off from my job of five years this morning. I've never been laid off or fired before and I don't know the first thing about unemployment benefits. I would deeply appreciate ANY tips about this process. I'm located in New Jersey if that makes a difference.

I guess my first question would be is it better to apply in person or online? Does it make a difference?
