Default You've just lost your job and have no savings

I just spent the whole of last week training a co-worker on how to do my job and no explanation is being provided. So I thought I would be proactive and reach out asap to members of the City Data community who are in the know. Maybe this interchange will also help others who may be in the need or who may soon find themselves in need.

1. What do you do or to what do you turn when you want to make a few bucks that very moment?

I came up with finding some empty plastic bottles by the side of the road or some glass ones from a local restaurant and turning them in to a recycling center for a couple of dollars. Another one is Amazon Mechanical Turk.

2. What has been done from home in order to generate a small but steady income? It can be a small business, a hobby or a craft.

My input is delivering phone books or newspapers from door to door or owning a vending machine route.

3. What reputable companies out there specifically hire workers to work from home. Can be national or international.

1-800-Flowers and Enterprise Rent-A-Car are two such companies. The latter hires Customer Support Representatives at $12/hr to work from home.

4. What do you do about health insurance?

I believe Kaiser has some pretty reasonable individual plans. Another idea I thought of is becoming a member of an (Association?) that allows its members group rate pricing or discounts on health insurance. However I'm not sure if such a time exists.

Your turn! Please feel free to send me a private or direct message as well.

It's not as easy to join the military now as you think it is. All the services are being very selective about who they recruit, and a lot of people are getting discharged that aren't doing their jobs.

Besides the fact that the military is downsizing.

Any other ideas? I know there are tons; just have to use your imagination. Just today I came across something on Craigslist wherein you can list your car on this company's website and they will find people who want to rent the car from you and the company will take care of the insurance so that yours is not touched.

Deliver pizzas, cut grass, donate plasma, aluminum cans.

As far as insurance, I had a high deductable/major medical policy for 90 dollars a month. If you're hospitalized, you'll owe 5K instead of 100K.

Hope your fears aren't true. Maybe they need more people doing tasks that you do because there's more work coming down the pipe.

This is kind of a strange post. First off I would ask why am I training someone on my job duties.

Why don't you have any savings? You say you're proactive, well then considering how bad the economy has been the last few years should have been a reason to save money for a rainy day.

Seeing all these layoffs should have motivated you to put money aside. For example you brown bag your lunch and save an average of $10 a day right there. That's $200 a month.

Most people don't go from job loss to being destitute overnight.

Something "fishy" about this post.

Just curious - what insurance company offers this (bolded)?
I was just quoted $740 a month for a high deductible policy - which of course I couldn't afford

Me too - I would love to know where to find such a policy as well.

Seaindublin: How do you know that I haven't put funds aside? That is why the title is "You've just lost your job and have no savings" instead of "I've." I always like to plan for worst-case scenarios and am always hungry for ideas and input which I why I made sure to include and share my own input.
