I'm 42 years old, recently found myself with drastically reduced hours at my regular job which pays $10/hr. I was awarded partial unemployment. I don't want to work at another burger joint in L. A. but I need more money. During the first interview the manager asked how well I do with drama in the workplace. Which kinda turned me off to the job. Any thoughts appreciated.

First, your earnings from your current job WILL reduce the benefit CA awarded you. You are required to report those earnings when you claim benefits.

Read this thread:

Second, your remaining benefit will be further REDUCED by your earnings from the part time job, leaving you with nothing, in the end, because you have to report them, too.

FYI:

CA allows you to keep 25% of what you earn.

Ex: You work 20 hrs. @ $8.50 = $170.

You are allowed to keep $42.50 (25% x $170)

The remainder - $127 - is deducted from your benefit.

But, in your case, you will be working more than that - for nothing.

Do the math.

Plus, due to a disastrous computer upgrade, it is taking CA weeks and weeks to process benefit payments when you work. Some on this board haven't been paid for a long, long time. So immediate cash flow relief isn't there, either. In your case, if you're working two jobs, there won't be any.

And, don't even think about not reporting your earnings from this burger joint - which many do because they're so short of cash. CA will find out about it right away, stop your benefits, and assess an overpayment and penalties.

Try to find a better full time job ASAP, instead. And, meanwhile, see the CA social services immediately to apply for food stamps and other assistance.

Thanks for the info. I had no intentions of not reporting any earnings. But I'd rather just work full time for a decent wage rather than deal with the CA UI. On the other hand, I don't want to work my butt off in a job I know I won't like for less than minimum wage.

In your case, you'd be working for nothing, most likely.

Take your weekly benefit, deduct 75% of your gross earnings from both jobs.

Chances are your remaining benefits are zero.
