You may know this already the benefits calculator on the home page where you normally claim

New York State Department of Labor

Hit home tab if your not on it

on the right side, the third rounded rectangle down =

Unemployment Insurance Benefits Calculator

hit that

enter the date when you first filed the claim

use this format include slashes

09/28/2012

^^ just an example

hit calculate weeks

The total number of weeks is all you get even if the extension goes through

Go to where you usually claim and choose "view payment history" instead of "claim weekly benefits"
Disregard the Maximum Amount Payable amount figure, it goes strictly by number of weeks

Just count the weeks. You will only get benefits up to the amount of weeks on the calculator

The date you started that goes in the calculator is on this "view payment history" page at the top it says "Start/Effective Date"

(the earliest date at the bottom Waiting week $0.00 is also counted)

You can keep claiming if you are eligable to keep claiming and then collect retroactively but only if the extension is approved. If you run out then the "claim weekly benefits" button will no longer be available
If it's apporved you may have a lot more benefits or you may have none. It depends on when you started and the number of weeks allowed, which varies from that starting point. You're not getting 3 more months or a year more, only if you are just starting and only if they approve the bill. You will get, at maximum, if they approve the extension, the number of weeks on that calculator

In other words you may have to go on public assistance and it takes 45 days of waiting after applying
