We had discussed the merits of the UI bill passing during May in page 19 of this thread. We weighed it's timing against the Senate deal which would fund federal jobless benefits through the end of May. Since the UI bill includes retroactive payments of missed unemployment checks since December, it would meet with strong opposition from the House GOP who would resist having to cut big checks written to claimants, only to have the extension process start over again.
Republican leadership want any deal for the jobless to include a revamp of the federal workforce training programs. Time is running out on the 5-month extension to revamp the program and implement the changes. If the bill was passed, it could take weeks to get programs running again and up to speed. The main hope for EUC to be passed is for the Republicans to get something in return for passing EUC.
From nationalpriorities.org: Congress may extend tax breaks but not unemployment benefits:-
"Lawmakers are likely to pass an extension of these tax breaks and thus add $700 billion to budget deficits over the next 10 years. That’s a big deal in light of another issue under discussion in Washington: extending emergency unemployment benefits for the long-term unemployed. Why, you might ask, hasn’t Congress extended these emergency benefits for people who can’t find jobs? One of the major hold-ups was about offsetting the $10 billion cost so it doesn’t add to the deficit. You heard me right. In Congress’s logic, it’s fine if tax breaks for corporations add to the deficit (and by the way, we’re not in a deficit crisis – but that’s another story). But when it comes to unemployment benefits for the long-term unemployed – we just can’t spare the change".
eric cantor just said on fox news that this bill will not be allowed on the house floor and that basically the bill is a waste of time as a result. going to be a long battle in the house after it passes the senate today. i hear boehner is getting flooded with calls from the unemployed. wonder if he will care or just have his staff continue to deal with that pressure because it doesn't bother him in the least bit according to sources.
I read that , alot of people think its Boehner who make the decision but it is actually Cantor who decieds if a bill goes onto the House floor .
(Cantor on Friday) Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., who decides which bills are considered on the House floor, “(The Senate bill) doesn’t create any jobs. And right now we are in the business of seeing how we can get people back to work for an America that works for more people.”

I do think that in order for it to pass, repubs will have to get something in return. The dems I'm certain realize this, and the whole point of working deals is a compromise. Thats why I wonder if this has all been a political game. If they want it passed, it can get done.
Problem is the Democrats are not making any deals and the only deal the Republicans want are ones the Democrats will not agree to . And any compromise etc would involve this bill having to go back to the Senate again and then we are into june at that point. Hopefully during the Easter break they come up with something but after 4 months of nothing I wouldn't put any money on it.
if they werent even serious about passing this bill, it's nonsense that they continue to act like they are fighting for it. everyone needing the benefits are hanging by a thread...of course im sure its for future votes.

They're doing this so that, come November, they can say "we fought tooth and nail for you. we did all we could do for you" and all the other nonsense.
I, for one, cannot wait until November. I will be first on line at the polls!
so basically the dems know this will not got passed and really no one is fighting for it at this point, but dems are looking for future votes so they act like they are. is that what everyone is getting too?

The unpopularity of ObamaCare and its disastrous rollout combined with the sinking poll numbers of the president may all combine to bring both houses of Congress under GOP control in January 2015. The GOP is not feeling the heat from the unemployment situation, and the 2.3m long term unemployed might not be enough to influence the outcome of the mid-term election. That's why rhetoric like "this bill will not be allowed on the house floor" and "the bill is a waste of time" are given.
Part of the issue is the press is igmoring it. Over the weekend they had a discussion of employment and unemployment and no mention of this vote or even the extension and on morning Joe this mornign same thing. They had a discussion of jobs and unemployed and no mention of EUC or the vote. Neither party feels any heat because there is none.
