WHEN is a function of the circumstances surrounding the reason why you lost your job and what your employer is like.

However to be safe, just plan on waiting 6 weeks before getting anything IF you get anything at all, and then you won't be disappointed.

Seeing as how you haven't applied yet, you should be talking about if whether applying on Jan 2 is the right thing for you. Did you do benefit calculations to make sure you're getting the right benefit and consuming the right number of quarters of wages that makes sense for your circumstances and ability to predict the future?

i filed in NJ on 11-25-2018. It was a straightforward situation. They fired me, straight up. Had a phone interview about a month later on 12-20-2018. Guy told me to expect something within the next 4 weeks. Woke up on 12-28-2018 to unemployment deposited on my card. I was shocked as i didnt expect ANYTHING until the first week of 2019, at the earliest.

Same answer. It depends on WHY you lost your job as to how long it takes.

That will probably depend on when you get paid!

Now, it depends on your EMPLOYER. If they quickly respond to your application for UI as a laid off person, and say the same, you can get paid right away. If they sit on it and say "fired" because they want to make trouble for you, NJ UI thinks you might have been fired for misconduct and will wait 6 weeks or longer to give the employer plenty of time to contest your claim and investigate.
