NJ Unemployment Extension Qualifies for Tier 2 !!
From About.Com: Understanding the Two Tiers of Extended Benefits (January 2, 2009) There have been many questions about the number of weeks provided by Congress through Unemployment Compensation Extension Act of 2008 passed on November 21, 2008. This Q and A attempts to answer key questions about the two tiers of benefits. How many weeks of benefits am I entitled to? Workers in low unemployment states are eligible for a total of 20 weeks of benefits, while workers in high unemployment states are eligible for 33 weeks of benefits. High unemployment is defined as a state unemployment rate above 6% for a three month period. What is the difference between first tier and second tier benefits? In all 50 states, those who exhausted the 13 weeks of EUC benefits before the passage of the new law in November are now eligible for an existing 7 weeks of extended benefits. These are called additional first tier benefits. If they live in a state with an unemployment rate of 6 percent or above (over a three month period), workers are eligible for an additional 13 weeks of second tier benefits. For some of us this is very good news. You get very limited help, if any when it comes to unemployment issues from the State and on here too. Tier one (13+7 wks =20) has to be exhausted by Mar 22 to qualify for tier 2, which is an additional 13 wks for States with unemployment rate of 6% or higher for 3 mos, which NJ now is. Here is where I found this info: OpenCongress - U.S. Congress - H.R.6867 Unemployment Compensation Extension Act of 2008 (http://www.opencongress.org/bill/110-h6867/comments/1028?navtab=comments - broken link)

Ok so let me get this straight.
My 24 weeks is up in 5 weeks. Now if I still can't find work in my field, I am allotted an additional 20 weeks?
Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

They sent out a letter for the tier 2 unemployment. After the first extension runs out, you will be noticifed if you qualify for Tier 2. They will give you instructions on how and when to claim. So Tier 2 is now on its way for NJ!

yes another 20 weeks and then if you still dont find a job and the State has still the 6 percent unemployment rate which it will you can collect on Tier 2 another 13 weeks. So basically you have 8 months about total extra!!!

benefit year?
(I don't think my first post went through.)
I qualified for the add'l tier 1 (7 weeks to Mar 22) and received 2 checks until Dec 25. I thought I had 3 weeks balance but received no more checks. I went to the local office but was told to refile because my benefit year expired Dec 27, 08, but then received an invalid claim notice. (I also received the Tier 2 notice before that btw). Does this sound right? I am not eligible for the balance of tier 1 or tier 2 for the unemployed becuse I was unemployed?
Does anyone have a similiar problem, if so should I appeal, or am I sunk? THANKS!
