Default Do you believe in demons?

I always believed in ghosts, but demons I am not so sure. Anyone have any experiences? Also thoughts on exorcisms?

I do not. The concept of demons originated in the ancient mythologies of the classical world. The Greeks believed that "daemons" lived among us, which were basically supernatural beings that were neither good nor evil, but that weren't quite powerful enough to be considered gods. The religions of the Near East and Middle East and India, I believe, had plenty of evil spirits and monsters in them. Put those together and scramble them with Judaism and Christianity and you get the legions of hell led by the devil himself! But I think this is all just mythology.

As I said in another thread today, I think that there are definitely spirits that are not ghosts (not dead humans), and sure, these spirits can behave badly. Those are the ones people call demons. But my guess is that they are just spirits behaving badly, for the same reason sometimes people behave badly. If you ask me what I think spirits are, I think they're life forms that are more evolved than we are, that possibly don't inhabit three dimensional space, and thus that we are unable to perceive.

I also believe in the presence of inhuman spirits that are malevolent. Agrees earlier, that all paranormal entities are not Ghosts. That is one type, but by all means, not the only kind.

I also do not this that all entities are evil, or as some fundie Christians do, all demonic.

Depends on how one defines 'demon'. If its anything connected to the devil of religion, then not really.
However, there are energies/spirits that are not kind, but are quite rare.
Now there is another form/definition of demon, a.k.a monkey on your back.
Bad habits and attitudes that go beyond just the person and effects the people around them.
Most active demons are in the mind.

There's nothing that demands life be carbon-based flesh-and-blood creatures... and considering how life as we know it is essentially marooned on it's planet of origin, an energy-based creature that could cruise the galaxy at will would have a great advantage over us.

So what if "sentient energy aliens" (patent pending ) did exist? What if they found us? What if they were bored? Maybe they would act like kids teasing the zoo animals... maybe they would even pick up on human culture and beliefs, using them to their advantage and/or personal pleasure by pretending to be our "bogey men"?

Demons could be points of negative spiritual energy which do seem to have a life of their own, which somehow work to bring us down.

Scott M. Peck M.D.(a psychiatrist), wrote "People of The Lie" The Hope for Healing Human Evil, first published in 83'.

Explored the idea of mental illness v. evil. His accounts of therapy with such indivduals in private practice and witnessed numerous exorcisms.

Lorraine and Ed Warren wrote about 8 books on the topic and their own encounters and exorcisims. They believed there were entities in the notorious Amityville, NY home of the DeFeo family.

I've personally seen a 3ft shadow person more than once, I can't say if it were demonic.

A friend told me shes saw 5 shadow people, they just came out of the wall, she said she couldn't get out of the house fast enough, was standing in the living room stacked with moving boxes and ran out the front door. The family was in the process of moving from a home in CA. Her Aunt and Mother had played with the Ouiji board in the home many times.

First, I love the book "People of the Lie" by the late M.Scott Peck.

I happen to believe in demons. I am not obsessed with them, and I do not think that they are the norm in paranormal activity, but they are out there, as well as sometimes, in there.

I am not sure if all shadow people are demons. This is (no pun intended) a grey area for me.

There are demonic hauntings, as well as other forms of hauntings.

I am confused about the Warrens. I'm not sure what to think. I have heard some people say that they are out for the money, and yet I have known personally of a woman who sought their help in the haunting of a rental house that she purchased where a murder had taken place. Her tenants were being harassed horribly, and with her help, the phenomena discontinued. The haunting was a combination of a regular haunting and a demonic haunting. The horrible nature of the murder, attracted the demonic to the house.

The Warrens by the way, charged my friend nothing.

At the very least I might disagree with the Warrens ( actually Ed Warren has passed on) on some theological issues. They are ultra conservative Roman Catholics, and think ALL phenomena and practices that are not Christian are demonic.

I would disagree with that.

But I agree that the Demonic exists.

I can't say if I believe or not. Being that I'm a Christian women and what I've been taught I would say yes demons are real but I don't want to believe they are. My younger brother on the other hand said that he saw one or something a long time ago when we were kids. It was at a very old church and we were there for bible study with some friends. After study we decided to go roam around to see the rest of the church and ended up in this dark room that was atop the building. On the other side of this room was a dim light, so we carefully made our way across the room to see where it lead. Thankfully it was an exit because while we were making our way across the room, one of our friends said that he felt someone touch his shoulders and when he looked back it wasn't anyone there. So after that we hurried along down the flight of stairs to get to safety and my brother was the last one behind. For whatever reason he stop to look back up the stairs and said that he saw something that looked like a black shadow with legs but no feet floating down the stairs toward him. He took off running so fast his feet didn't even hit the floor. We later told family and friends about it and they said oh yeah maybe it was a demon we don't know. Although I didn't see it I know my brother did because he was disturbed and couldn't sleep for days.
