I encountered these only in the last 2 years around the age of 50. At first scared the daylights out of me - same thing... do I have a tumor or a pre-cursor to a stroke or what?? Then learned it was a benign condition with no explanation. (I hope they're sure ;-))
Still so disconcerting when it happens - for me it's always been a deafening bang inside my head (I guess the gunshot description fits best), and always soon after falling sleep when it does occur. It's happened maybe 3 times over the last 2 years.

I get the same thing occasionally. Its frightening to experience.

OK . I want to know if this is a symptom or characteristic of EHS.
A few nights ago I was about to go to sleep and I felt sort of like a jolt of what I can only describe as electricity in my head. I woke up right away and it was pretty scary.
I felt as though my brain had short circuited, for lack of a better term.

No, that is not EHS.

Wow. I stopped in here to see what this was all about, with no idea it would be something like this.
The ringing phone thing, that's happened to me too, but it's not a regular thing... but when it does happen, I know it can't be real because there is never anyone on the phone when I answer it. And the last 5 or 6 years, I've had talking caller ID on my phone, so I know it can't be real, right? I used to blame it on the phone company doing something to the boxes out there. The thing is, I always feel so disquieted when it happens. Creeped out in a way.
Good to know it isn't just me.
Oh, and I've never had it happen while sleeping, if that means anything.

It could be the brain trying to self-stimulate at night when your eyes are closed and it's quiet...not a whole lot of stimulation. It's known that the brain, when deprived of stimuli, will come up with its own.

That sounds similar to something called "brain shivers" (among other terms), although that term is usually associated with the discontinuation of SSRI antidepressants.
I have experienced something similar. It does feel like electricity going through the head and sometimes through the body. The only other times I remember experiencing such a sensation was when I was a kid and coming down with a cold during the summer months. In both cases the sensation occurred during waking hours as well as when I was drifting off to sleep.

They say when Athena was born she burst through the head of Zeus fully armed.

Umm...so you're saying you're wide awake when you imagine the phone rings?
