There is a discussion going on in another thread concerning smudging, and rather than get a little off topic in that thread, I wanted to start a different thread.
In the small amount of research I have done on this process, What I find is like every ritual ,there was a time when it began.
Not being able to pinpoint an exact time, it just states it has been around for thousands of years, or at least a derivative of the process has.
It was used for different purposes among which many felt it was useful in offerings at sacrificial rituals.
As with all rituals, we actually have no idea of how they began, but have a clear understanding of how they have managed to be prolonged up to the modern days.
It matters not, if we are talking spirits of thousands of years ago, or spirits today.
They are the same, regardless of the years in between.
Let us take the ritual of incense burning, which may have been the precursor to smudging.
How did this ritual get it's start?
Every action has to have a beginning, and that action comes as a result of a thought.
A thought is generated by a single being.
One being somewhere, sometime thought it would use incense as a tool in communicating with the creator of all things.
Now we have to ask, what preceded this thought?
What caused this one being to think along these lines?
None of us were there, so we can only make an educated guess.
Lets, for the sake of argument, say this being was surrounded by negativity, and nothing it tried could quell the negative influence surrounding it.
Perhaps this being (human or spirit) now at it's wit's end, took a nearby branch from a bush, and in an attempt to rid itself of the negativity, fell to his knees, waving the branch screaming "away with you".
"Be gone from my presence".
To it's amazement, the negativity had vanished.
The being tells all who will listen of the fabulous event he has just witnessed.
All are eager to get involved in an attempt to rid themselves of what negativity they possess, and to their amazement, it too works for them.
Word spreads throughout the territory, and soon many tribes, and others in far off places are now using the principal..
This is how a ritual starts, and flourishes.
Now, let's go back to the original thought, and the reason for the thought in the first place.
This being was possessed by negativity.
Negativity that was within itself.
It is obvious that the being was overtaken by it, to the pointy it felt it had to try something, anything, to rid it of the negative energy, all the while promoting, and prolonging the negative by it's own thoughts.
A more up to date analogy; You just bought a used vehicle at the local dealership.
You are happy with your purchase in the terms that you needed another vehicle, and this one seems to be the right one for you.
That is a positive thought, that brings forth positive feelings.
On the way home you begin to think "Gee, I hope this car doesn't fail me, being used and all".
That is negative thinking, and a negative reaction will follow.
You stop by the store to pick up some sage because you heard it would get rid of the negative energy that your new found vehicle seems to be putting out.
The vehicle did not have the negative energy until you thought something negative about it.
Now you are convinced it is loaded with negative energy, and you must rid the vehicle of it.
When we think negative, things usually become such.
Smudging is a response from negative thinking, and nothing more.
Go back to the earlier time when this being felt possessed by it.
Negative thinking was the source of it's discontent.
It's thought created a ritual.
The ritual grew, and became popular, as most rituals do.
They all share one thing in common, that being they had their start by a single thought, from a single being, and in the case of incense, and smudging, negative thoughts were the catalyst.
Bob.

Few different scenarios and what ifs; I'll start with just one. It sort of picks up where we left off in the other discussion.
The car scenario is not a good one as an example of how and why sage is used.
In your example, you have the person coming up with their own negative -thought-.
Sage would not be used to change a thought pattern. But that does not mean that sage would not aid a mental shift as a simple distraction.
I'm going to change the car story a bit.
Person is shopping for a used car, they see one that has everything they want and need and the price is right. The car dealer starts it up, sounds good so person takes it for a test drive.
The car runs well and they are excited about purchasing the car.
As the person is test driving it, they start to get an odd and uncomfortable -feeling- (not thought). They don't like the feeling, but they are more excited about getting this great car.
The deal is made, paperwork is in order, person is feeling good and has happy thoughts.
They get in their new car to drive it home and two blocks into the ride, they get that uncomfortable and agitated feeling....and logically, to the person, there is no reason to feel this way. They get home and get out of the car, the excitement begins again because the family has come out to see the car. Person is still a bit irritated, but it wares off.

This is negative energy, it's a feeling and has nothing to do with a person's thoughts.
Energy is imprinted on objects and those who have a more open intuitive nature can feel this energy, those who are even more intuitive can identify the energy.
