The best-selling book that documents a 6-year-old’s journey to heaven and back during the two months he spent in a coma is being pulled from shelves after the boy, who is now 17, recanted his story.
It appears from one article I read that the family didn't get the financial proceeds from the book that they were promised. I suspect that was the original reason for the lie (profit) and the recant (lack of profit and revenge against publisher).
And yes it's obvious from his age that his parents encouraged the story.
Never read it. Most accounts of near-death experiences are pretty generic and in general contain a "message" that we're all the same and no matter where we're from or what we believe we all go to heaven. This is a complete contradiction of Christian teachings, which always makes me wonder why some so-called Christian publishers publish such books. Do true Christians really need confirmation of an afterlife through accounts of near-death experiences?

If you read the article and click on the link to the mom's blog, you'll see she says and believes exactly as you do.
From all indications, it was the boy's father (divorced from the mom) who authored and pushed the book and made all the money from it. The mother graciously doesn't mention him on her blog but she and the boy have been upset about the book for years, in fact the mother refused to read it.
I always question when there’s money to be made if it’s honest information or just someone doing it for profit……. Apparently the father seems to have an issue of dishonestly.
It wasn't just a book. Someone made a film out of it, too.
I don't think it was this one.... the movie you may be thinking of is "Heaven is for Real" which was based on the book of the same name. Different story; different boy.
